Elisa Afitu Naea

August 26, 1955 — August 2, 2018

Elisa Afitu Naea, age 62, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 2nd, 2018 in South Jordan, Utah. Elisa had several health complications including breast cancer for twenty years. Despite her medical disabilities, she lived life fully with optimism and joy.
She was born on August 26, 1955 in the village of Lotofaga, Samoa. Her enthusiasm for life was reflected early on as she participated in school clubs as a student and worked at a local radio station. She developed a talent of public speaking and eventually became a good friend and leader in her family, church and community. Even in sporting events she led her teams to several Championship victories in Volleyball and Cricket.
She led with love, always showing compassion to those she associated with but also gave strict correction and honest criticism when needed. Her increase of love reflected by her actions and words secured her friendships and magnified her service to others.
She was loved by children for her kindness and respected by adults for her wisdom. She cared deeply for her nieces and nephews and sacrificed often for other members of her family. In 2013 she urged her family to move to the state of Alaska seeking better healthcare for her husband. Elisa and her family left everything behind in Utah and spent the next five years in Anchorage, Alaska establishing a new home. Even in a new state she continued to make friends of strangers and broadened her family circle. Despite her illness, she made several trips back to Utah in support of family graduations, weddings and funerals. There was nothing in life that could prevent her from serving those she loved most.
Elisa is survived by her husband Lome Naea, children Jerome and Melveen Naea, and siblings Leota Funefeai Afitu (Olamai Afitu), Sami Afitu (Leini Afitu), Amituana’i Isaako Afitu, Taua’ituli Luatua (Avia Luatua), Tovia Fa’alogo (Nancy Fa’alogo), Uleti Frank Afitu, Tofi Laumua Tapusoa (Mauga Tapusoa), Mulifusi Samuelu Afitu (Serena Afitu).
Elisa is preceded in death by parents Pelesala and Leutu Afitu, brother Pakola Afitu, and sisters Faleasi Fitisemanu and Sulamai Afitu.
Elisa’s last wishes were to spend her final days surrounded by family and to be buried in the place she considered home.
