Earl Philip Morgan passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 in Salt Lake City at the age of 92. Born to Maud Walters Douglas and Earl Caldwell Morgan, November 27, 1921, in Weiser, Idaho. Married his loving wife, Nellie Janke, November 1951, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Phil worked hard on his family’s farm on 9th East in Salt Lake City for many years. He was a devout member of the LDS Church, serving in many church callings. Called to serve a mission in South Africa at age 26 and returned to Africa with Nellie to serve a second mission in Ghana, completing their mission in Thurso, Scotland.
Phil was a cabinet maker for Salt Lake Cabinet and Granite Mill, and served as president of local 725 Carpenters’ Union. He was proud of the houses he built for his family and the work he did on Abravanel Hall and LDS Temples. He loved singing with the Olympus Male Chorus and traveling with his family. Proud member of the Utah Minutemen, fighting to keep the freedoms established by our forefathers.
Preceded in death by his parents and sisters Evelyn (Joe) Neville and Gloria (Tom) Broadbent. Survived by his wife, Nellie and six children: Kim (Sophie), Walnut Creek, CA; Bryan (May), Fremont, CA; Denise “Khatara” (Tom Dawson), Coronado, CA; Stuart (Callie), Windham, NH; Janice Nelson, Sandy, UT; and Robert, Brooklyn, NY. He has 7 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren. Also survived by his sister, Jean (Al) Lindsay and brother, Earl (Marivic).
Funeral services to be held Saturday, December 14th, 1PM at the LDS Cottonwood 7th Ward, 5565 South Neighbor Lane, Holladay. Viewings Friday, December 13th, 6-8PM at Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay and at the ward one hour prior to the service. Interment Elysian Burial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the LDS Missionary or LDS Temple funds.
