Earl Martin Horne, Jr.

August 18, 1952 — December 11, 2020

Earl Martin Horne Jr. was born in Salt Lake City Utah on August 18, 1952, and passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 of COVID-19 pneumonia.
During his difficult birth he suffered a brain injury which affected his intellectual abilities for the rest of his life.
Earl was given for adoption at 2 weeks to Earl M. and Verda C. Horne.  At 13 months, shortly after his adoption was final, Earl began having seizures. As he grew, he also suffered from osteomyelitis in his left leg. It was extremely painful and he had to undergo numerous surgeries for the condition.
Earl learned to read in the first grade, but his behavior as a result of the seizure medication necessitated his removal from the public school system. He was schooled by a teacher at home for the next 9 years.
As Earl grew, he was taught right from wrong by loving parents. He grew to be a good man, with a desire to work. Everything he did was “work” to him, whether it was doing laundry at Peterson School or the Turn offices. Even creating art at the Art Center was “work” to him.
Earl especially enjoyed traveling and was able to take many trips with other special needs friends. In his later years he has been supervised by Turn Community Services, living in an apartment with a roommate.
Earl was a member of the Bountiful 23rd Ward for a number of years. The ward members took special care of him, including him in their Family Home Evenings and making sure he had a ride to church. The family is so grateful for their loving kindness. Earl especially enjoyed SNAP, and participating in their yearly production. Occasionally Earl was asked to sing a solo verse of I Am a Child of God at one of their performances.
Earl is survived by sisters Barbara (Gary) Thornock and Rebecca (LD) Peterson, nine nephews and nieces, and 17 great nephews and nieces. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister Barbara Joan Hodgson.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at three o’clock and will be followed by interment in the Memorial Holladay Cemetery.
