Dumayne “Gil” Gilson passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2015. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son.
Gil was the sixth of nine children born to Forest and Pearl Dumayne Gilson in Cleveland, Utah on April 2, 1929. Raised on a farm, and a hard worker his whole life, he taught by example rather than words the importance of family, service, loyalty, hard work, and a sense of humor.
Gil enlisted in the Marine Corps before completing high school. He then served a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alberta Canada, where he met Marjorie Ackroyd. They were married on November 7, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were great parents to five children: Terry (Thomas) Decker, Renee, Leslie (Randolph) Peterson, James (Patricia) Gilson, and Darin (Susan) Gilson.
Gil worked for railroads for over 40 years. He began as a telegrapher, and retired at age 65 as President of Utah Railway Company. He worked two jobs for nearly 20 years: purchasing agent for the railroad and manager/owner of Oil City service station in Price, Utah, before being promoted in 1970 to the railroad’s executive office in Salt Lake City.
Family leisure memories include boating at Lake Powell and Scofield. He also enjoyed motorcycling, tennis, and yard work. An active church member his entire life, he served faithfully in many callings, and rendered selfless, often anonymous, service to others.
On July 16, 2012, Marge passed away after nearly 62 years of marriage. On April 18, 2013, Gil married Norma Anderson Turner, a dear friend in St. George where Gil and Marge spent winters, whom Marge handpicked to be Dad’s companion. Norma has been a loving and gentle sweetheart to Dad and is also beloved by his entire family.
Gil is survived by his five children, his wife Norma, 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are LaVon Long, Mary Jenne, Foresta Nielson, and Charles (LaVee) Gilson.
Funeral services will be held at the Grandview 1st Ward, 2930 South 2000 East in Salt Lake City, on Tuesday, July 28, at 11:00 a.m. , with a viewing from 9:30 –10:40 a.m. Interment at Holladay Memorial Park. Online condolences may be shared at www.holladaycottonwoodmortuary.com
