Dorothy Thelda Nix Nelson

June 9, 1931 — January 9, 2021

Dorothy Thelda Nix Nelson, 89, Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away at home on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Dorothy was born on June 9, 1931 to Foster and Thelda Nix “in the old house on Coleman Street,” in Tooele, Utah.
Raised on the family farm with her five siblings, Dorothy developed lasting traits of self-reliance, resourcefulness, courage and determination that shaped her approach to life. She was actively involved in school, cheerleading, and her community and made many lasting friendships. She loved music, singing, especially yodeling, and refined her passion for art by dedicating much of her life as a professional portrait artist. With enviable talent, Dorothy possessed incredible persistence to start a drawing from a single pencil stroke and have it viewed by others as a beautiful masterpiece when finished. She willingly accepted requests by many who cherished her art as moments frozen in time, and generously shared her time and talents by teaching others.
Dorothy had a tremendous love for the outdoors. She enjoyed hiking the beautiful mountains surrounding her home and going camping, hunting and boating with her family. Her gorgeous yard reflected her love of the outdoors and it was kept to impeccable standards. Using the fruit from her trees, she made jams and pies and included family in her baking secrets. Her backyard gazebo was where she enjoyed many memorable family parties, gatherings, and was a favorite place of hers to sit and visit with others.
Dorothy’s infectious sense of humor united her family and created stories even the best of liars couldn’t dream up. She often said, “No one believes me when I tell the truth, and no one believes me when I lie, so I may as well just lie!” Her sharp wit and laughter will be deeply missed.
Dorothy’s legacy will forever live strong through future generations sharing her love of art, music and sense of adventure. She is survived by her husband, Ron Nelson, her four boys, Larry Jones (Ursula), Robert Jones (Joy), LaMar Jones (Marsha), and Gordon Jones (Marilyn), 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great- great grandchildren.
Dorothy’s life will be celebrated with a Visitation at Memorial Holladay~Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, January 12, starting at 1:00 PM.
