Dorothy Bills Thorpe, age 91, passed away by natural causes on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
She was born in Riverton and grew up in Midvale. The daughter of great pioneer heritage, Dorothy was always willing to tell about her varied life experiences. She had her formative years during the great depression and was able to relate the many lessons learned during this trying time. Yet, she had some happy memories of changes that occurred in life at that time. She often talked about the hard times and how they got better when they got rations coupons.
She met her husband, Harold Emerson Thorpe, before World War II; they dated when he came home on leave, but did not marry until after his Naval service. She was blessed with two children, Karen (Thorpe) Valentine and Clive Thorpe.
Dorothy worked at JCPenney for many years while her children were younger. She spent about 15 years working at the University of Utah in the purchasing department. She always spoke highly of her time and her coworkers there. She loved to play practical jokes on coworkers and her boss. She became a diehard Ute fan in a family that bleeds true blue.
She highly enjoyed traveling with her husband and was able to travel to a multitude of areas in the United States and Canada. She had many memories of the gorgeous places of this hemisphere.
Dorothy was a caring wife, mother and grandmother who was beloved by her grandchildren. Always a character, she was the first to tell a story or have fun. She loved to go places and do things that were out of the ordinary. She also loved a great get together with good food. People were drawn to her bright and witty personality.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Emerson Thorpe, and since his death, her goal has been to return to his side. Survived by daughter, Karen (John) Valentine, son Clive Thorpe, eight grandchildren, and 14 ½ great grandchildren.
