Dorothy Elaine Cook Jones passed away peacefully on September 26, 2016 in Cottonwood Heights at the age of 89. Dorothy was born in Baker City, Oregon on March 20, 1927 to Maurice and Cora Cook. After graduating from Baker High School, Dorothy attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she was introduced to the LDS church and her eternal companion Keith. Dorothy was baptized just before she and Keith were married on November 23, 1946 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in March of 1947.
Dorothy and Keith built their dream home in East Millcreek where they raised their children and where Dorothy lived for 60 years. The Canyon Rim 4th Ward was where Dorothy met people who would become lifelong friends. Dorothy loved the gospel and served in musical callings in both the Primary and Relief Society. Dorothy loved to travel and one of her favorite destinations was Jackson Hole, Wyoming because of it’s natural beauty. After Keith passed her favorite social activities were Family Home Afternoons with her widowed friends and Lunch Bunch with the ward. Dorothy could often be found puttering around her garden or reading mystery novels. She had a love for dogs—especially Shelties—and she had many over the years.
Dorothy was well known for her baking which she loved to share with others. With her passing, Dorothy’s secret lemon poppy seed bread recipe will finally be made available to the rest of the family. She loved quilting and tried to make a quilt for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren despite the pain of her arthritis. One of Dorothy’s greatest joys in her later years were her great grandchildren and their pictures were always displayed proudly. Dorothy may have been small in stature but she was a force to be reckoned with and all those who knew her will miss her. We will miss playing cards, picking raspberries, and her pink Christmas tree.
She is survived by her five children; Robert (Sue), Dave (Sandie), Gary (Denise), Kyle (Tracy) and Janene Cox, by 22 grandchildren who call her Oma and 33 ½ great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Keith, parents Maurice and Cora, and her brother Robert. The family would like to thank the staff of Canyon Creek Senior Living and Hospice of Utah, her aide Chantel and especially her nurse Joan Pfau whom Dorothy said was like a sister to her.
