Dev (Deveaux) Clark

May 13, 1927 — January 23, 2017

Dev (Deveaux) Clark, formerly of Salt Lake City, passed away at the age of 89 after a long term illness. Dev was born in Lehi, Utah on May 13, 1927, to Sylvester and Susanna Jane Clark. The family later moved to the Midvale area where Dev grew. As a young teen he was an active sportsman and with his brother Walt Swain, was active in auto racing in Salt Lake City and at the Bonneville Salt Flats. He liked to tell the story about the day he held the land speed record at the Salt Flats for 1 hour. In 1944 Dev joined the United States Navy and was sent to the South Pacific, first aboard a submarine as sonar man and later was transferred to a destroyer, the U.S.S. Rowen, as signalman. Dev received an honorable discharge in 1948. He went to the University of Utah and worked part time for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.
In 1950, Dev met and married Maurine Dunyon of Salt Lake City and the couple later moved to the Los Angeles area where he continued his schooling and worked on the railroad in that area. By 1956 the young couple had moved back to Utah and Dev joined the Farmers Insurance Company as an agent. He later left the agency to work directly for Farmers Insurance in Billings, Montana. Much traveling involved this position and in 1960 he was transferred to the Regional Office in Pocatello, Idaho where he became Life Sales Manager. In 1964 Dev’s wife of 14 years passed away after a long illness.
Later he left the company as an employee and moved with his 3 children to Salt Lake City where he bought his own agency and became a District Manager for Farmers Insurance Company. In 1965 Dev met Marge (Marjorie) Jacobson who had 4 children and on February 3, 1966 the couple was married, becoming the parents of 7 children. Snow skiing in the winter, camping and water skiing in the summer kept this family of 9 busy and bonding together.
Dev had many passions in life besides cars and trains and in 1975 he received his pilot’s license for single engine and later received his multi engine rating in general aviation. In 1980 – 1981 Dev became President of the Utah Pilots Association. Pilot safety was a big concern of his and he traveled throughout the state of Utah conducting classes and meetings on pilot safety. In his office was a plaque that read: “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no, old, bold, pilots.” He was among the best of small aviation pilots. Another passion of Dev’s was fishing in the Northwest Territories for lake trout and also fishing in the Kona Gold at Kona, Hawaii for marlin.
In 1986 Dev, after 30 years with Farmers Insurance, decided to take an early retirement and retired on December 31, 1986. After months of searching Arizona and California for the perfect place to live where they could play golf year round, Dev and Marge found Rancho Murieta, California. They moved to this area January of 1987 and built their home. From 1988 to 2013 Dev and Marge, with many of their Rancho Murieta friends, traveled to St. George, Utah to attend the World Sr. Games, competing in golf. Many gold, silver and bronze medals were won by these Rancho Murieta athletes. By 1990 this very energetic man decided to get back into the business world and built and operated Quick Lube and Oil Change shop until 2004, and once again entered into retirement. In 1993, a longtime friend Jim Lundberg, invited Dev to be his navigator in the Great American Race, riding in a 1929, 7 passenger, Touring Car from Huntington Beach, California to Norfolk, Virginia. The trip took 2 weeks traveling across the United States. Dev later became a Docent at the Sacramento Railroad Museum. He went through the usual training program and enjoyed conducting tours around and through the railroad cars, bringing back many memories from his early days working on the railroad. He also went to work for Ace Hardware part time for several years in Rancho Murieta. Dev enjoyed meeting and being with people.
Of all the many passions Dev enjoyed in life, his family was most important to him. With his extended family, they were his kids and from the family of 7 children he had 26 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He liked to brag that he had attended all 26 grandchildren’s’ high school graduations, in Utah, Maine and Oregon. Dev and Marge
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on February 3, 2016.
Dev is survived by his wife Marge, his sons Day (Ruth) Clark, Cody Clark, and daughter
Jennie Peterson; his extended family, daughters; Sharon Lints, Linda (Mark) Olsen, sons Tom (Mary) Jacobson III and Karl (Vicki) Jacobson, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
