Denise “Denny” Quinn, our beautiful mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah after a long, extremely successful and giving life.
She was known for her outgoing personality, tremendous sense of humor and her beautiful social grace.
Denny graduated from East High School at the age of 16, from the University of Utah with honors, after she had been admitted to the University Of Utah Medical School. She continued her educational pursuit at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri where she was awarded the degree of doctor of medicine at the age of 21. She was a member of the CHI OMEGA Sorority.
Denise was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was married August 5, 1941, at the Garden Park Ward in Salt Lake City, Utah and, a day later, sealed in the Logan, Utah Temple to the love of her life, James H. Quinn, M.D. The couple enjoyed years of happiness and many wonderful experiences traveling the world before he passed away in 1984.
She entered medical practice as a pediatrician serving in well baby clinics in Utah and Montana. She also performed numerous physical examinations and taught health education to entering freshman girls at The University of Utah.
In 1961 Denny continued her professional aspirations by entering a residency in Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry and Neurology. As a Board Certified Psychiatrist she engaged in private practice and served as an associate professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah School of Medicine where, for her many accomplishments, she earned the 2010 Pathfinder Award for “50 years of excellence in child psychiatry education.”
Dr. Quinn is survived by her 4 sons, James, Jr. (Pat), David (Daryl), Richard (Mary) and Jeffrey (Sharon); her brother Dale T. Callister, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, James H. Quinn, M.D., her father A.C. Callister, M.D., mother Vera Taft Callister, brother Cyril T. Callister, M.D., sisters, Vera Taft Badham and Vera June Beless; and her granddaughter, Wendi K. Quinn.
Among her many philosophies in life were to swing a mean golf club or tennis racquet with excellence, swim like a dolphin, strive to learn something new every day and “leave every person you have contact with, in a better place than they were before you met.” She was truly loved and will be greatly missed.
A viewing will be held at the Holladay-Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 S Highland Drive, Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with a Memorial Celebration of an incredible life at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
