Delmar Bastian

August 14, 1932 — July 29, 2021

DelMar Bastian was born on August 14, 1932, in Vernal, Utah, to Jacob Wilford Bastian and Leah Timothy Bastian.  He was the youngest of eight children, who all preceded him into the next life.  He loved living in Vernal and always said it was the best place in the world.  He was a champion athlete, talented musician, and musical theatre star.  He graduated from high school in 1950 and entered the University of Utah that fall with a dream of becoming a pilot.  He was active in the Air Force ROTC and graduated with an accounting degree from the University of Utah in 1954.  He was then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and was assigned to Spence Air Base where he was trained as a pilot.
DelMar had a stellar career in the Air Force.  He was the 83rd person to win the Air Force Pistol Distinguished Badge of Honor.  Only 240 people have ever received this distinction.  After 12 years, he was promoted to Major and left active duty to become a pilot for United Air Lines.  He continued serving our country in the Air Force Reserves, achieving the rank of Full Bird Colonel in the Air Force and Captain at United.  When he left the Air Force, he had amassed over 12,000 flight hours and retired from United having flown over 38,000 additional hours.
He met and married the love of his life, Wanda Pierce Bastian, while in flight school in Moultrie, Georgia.  They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1956.  DelMar and Wanda raised their four children in Sonoma, California.  After retirement, they served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to North Salt Lake, Utah, spending their winters in San Tan Valley, Arizona.
There has never been a kinder, gentler person than DelMar Bastian.  Everyone who knew him loved him, and he never met a person he didn’t like.  He saw the best in others and was generous with his time and resources.  His infectious laughter and clever sense of humor will be sorely missed.  He adored his immediate and extended family and made every member feel like they were his special favorite.
He is survived by his loving wife Wanda; his four children, Preston (Nancy), Justin (Jackie), Shanna (Matt), and Colton (Christine); his 12 grandchildren, Ryan, Jennika, Marit, Parker, Dani, Carter, Zach, Taryn, Morgan, Brooke, Jessa, and Gunner; his three great grandchildren, Grason, Maelyn, and Max; and his many very beloved nieces and nephews and extended family.
DelMar was surrounded at his bedside by Wanda and his four children as he was called home on July 29, 2021.
