Della Mccurtain

Della McCurtain, our strong Navajo Matriarch, passed away on April 21, 2021 at the age of 91 in West Valley City, Utah. She was born on January 10, 1930 in Whippoorwill, Arizona to Dan D. Begay and Bah. She was raised in Tselani, Arizona. Della was Towering House Clan born for Red Running Into the Water Clan, her maternal grandfather was Salt Clan and her paternal grandfather was Bitter Water Clan. Della married Henry McCurtain on October 9, 1965 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She attended Chinle Boarding School, and left Arizona to attend Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah. After completing her education, she worked at LDS Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. After that, she started a family. She was a homemaker, and once her children were old enough, she worked and retired from E and J Manufacturing.
Della loved gardening vegetables and flowers. She loved birds, and collected rocks. Weaving Navajo rugs was one of her specialties. Embroidery, Sewing, watching the Utah Jazz, and she loved supporting her grandchildren in their activities. She loved her cat, Grim, and enjoyed family gatherings.
Della is survived by her husband, Henry McCurtain, her children: Diane McCurtain, Darrell McCurtain, Darren McCurtain, and Tina (Anthony) Truesdell, her grandchildren: Emily McCurtain, Bailee Truesdell, Hunter McCurtain, and Jonah Truesdell, siblings: Naswoody Begay, Esther Begay, James Begay, Grace Johnson, Lester Begay, Rozita Jake, Malita Jim, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Dan D. Begay and Bah, her infant brother and an older sister who was a young girl.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123. An evening viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:30 PM at the same location. A daytime viewing will be held prior to the service from 8:30 – 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the services at the same location. To conclude the services, a luncheon will be provided at the same location.
