Delbert Lavar Yates

July 21, 1931 — June 8, 2016

Delbert Lavar Yates, 84, son of Charles Harris Yates and Mamie Marie Hammond, returned to his loving Heavenly Father June 8, 2016.
Delbert was born July 21, 1931 in Lake Point, Utah. He was raised in Lake Point as the second to youngest of 8 siblings. When he was 22, Delbert joined the US Air Force with a close friend, serving as an Airman Second Class (in the branch now known as the US Coast Guard) from 1953 to 1957. He worked on rescue crash boats in Bermuda and Washington State. Just after he joined the service, he was introduced to his wife, Joanne Knowlden, through a mutual friend. After a quick courtship of only a couple dates, they were engaged. He married and was sealed to his sweetheart April 15, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together for 63 years and had three children.
Once he finished his service, he worked for Hercules and then Kaman Bearing. He also owned his own janitorial service, working side by side with his two sons. He also supported his wife in various businesses, including a ceramic shop as well as JoDell Flowers. After retiring, Delbert worked at Wal-Mart in the gardening and flower department; a job that he loved.
Delbert loved to garden and always had a beautiful well-kept yard that he spent countless hours cultivating. He was an extremely hard-worker and always seemed to be on the go. His grandkids often joked that if anyone wanted to keep up, they had better keep up with grandpa because he always set the fastest pace. Delbert always had a twinkle in his eye and loved to tease his children and grandchildren until they laughed.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Joanne Yates; his youngest brother Grant (Joyce) Yates of Vera Park, Wash.; his three children: Kevin (Jerry) Yates of Magalia, Calif.; Byran (Cindy) Yates of Shelley, Idaho; and Jolynn Yates of St. George, Utah; as well as his grandchildren: Matt (Karee) Yates; Jennifer (Michael) Mayer; Lee (Rebekah)Yates; and Stephanie (Chris) Kregse; nine great grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Pepper. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings: Genevieve Jane (Voyle) Shields; Gerald (Roma) Yates; Glenwood Yates; Bernice (Kenneth) Mann; Chester (Radeen) Yates; Effie Yates; and Lewis (Carla) Yates.
