David O Garner

June 23, 1925 — October 19, 2019

David O Garner was joyfully reunited with his loved ones on October 19, 2019 at the age of 94. He was born in Sugar City, Idaho on June 23, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents Lyman Jasper Garner and Bertha Grace Crandall, wife, Dona Carole Lewis, all eight of his siblings, five of which grew to adulthood. They were Grace (4 months), Dale (Hazel Lucille Fikstad), Russell (Margaret Haws), Delpha (George Mathewson), Helen (13 years), William (died at birth), Mark (wife unknown), and Myron (age 8). Also, he was preceded by his daughter Vicki Carole and grandson Jed Russell Packer.
About the age of 10 Dave’s father gave him a collie pup that he named Pat, who became his constant companion. In Eastern Idaho the winters were bitterly cold and he taught Pat to pull him on a sleigh. Pat could pull that sleigh in a mile in less than 2 minutes through the snow. These were the years of the depression and Dave worked in the fields thinning and topping beets for $1 a day. Bankruptcy loomed over the family farm and they moved near Nampa, Idaho, when Dave was a sophomore. He worked in the fields and orchards and graduated from Nampa High School before leaving for the war.
Dave entered Camp Roberts, California, in 1944. He was Army Infantry. Seventeen weeks later he was sent to Fort Ord near San Francisco. He served honorably in the Philippines and Japan.
On returning home to the farm, he had a new neighbor. There he met the love of his life, Dona Carole Lewis. They were together for 65 years until her death. They had four children: Nancy (Roger Stoddard), Jeri Ann (Keith Bowman), Vicki (Scott Kiesig), and Brad (Teresa Tanksersley). There are 15 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Dave loved farming. He bought his own acreage and had dairy cows as well as grew alfalfa and corn. He also had hogs and chickens. Our old house had no utility room or bathroom and eventually Dave built one onto the house. Eventually the stress of lifting the heavy milk cans became too much and Dave had to sell the farm and moved the family to Caldwell where he tried a fast food restaurant and then eventually got into retail sales. It turned out he was very good at it and that is what he did until he retired.
Dave knew that someday he wanted to work in the temple as an ordinance worker. Even though there was no temple nearby, he had faith in the Lord that the way would be made for him. He worked hard and saved so that he could eventually retire and serve the Lord. In the meantime, he loved to fish and during his free time he went to the rivers and reservoirs and tried every hook and lure he could find to get as many fish as possible. He had a good friend, Ed, who frequently went with him. They had a boat that they spent many pleasurable hours on the water looking for “the fish”. His grandson, Jed, called him every Saturday. They talked about fishing among other things. Jed was already waiting for his grandpa and there had to have been a special reunion between those two.
When Dave was finally able to retire the Lord had provided the temple. Dave & Dona had moved to Boise, Idaho, and there was a magnificent temple waiting for them. They both served faithfully for many years and enjoyed the time within the walls with all their hearts. Eventually their health began to decline and they needed to be nearer to family so they made the decision to relocate to Utah to be near Jeri and Brad.
Dave and Dona lived their last years near Jeri and Brad in West Jordan, Utah. Brad and his wife, Teresa, eventually moved in with Dave to help out with his care a few years after Dona passed away.
