David Leroy Weber

July 3, 1943 — February 18, 2022

David LeRoy Weber passed away in Salt Lake City on February 18, 2022 at the age of 78 after a brief battle with pneumonia. With his passing, his family, friends, and the world lost a truly authentic, unapologetically quirky, and wonderfully unique human. While we miss his big, bright personality and feel his absence profoundly, we know his journey is not over and he has moved forward to joyously reunite with loved ones who have gone before.
David was born to Jacob and Violet Weber on July 3, 1943 in Laramie, Wyoming and had five siblings: Warren, Virginia, Linda, Gary, and Gayle. Always a small-town boy at heart, he often spoke with great fondness of his hometown, Thermopolis, Wyoming, even though his childhood and teenage years were sometimes difficult. He was devoted to his dear mother and credits her for encouraging him to get an education and pursue his goals.
After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern States and graduating from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in social science, David found himself living in Salt Lake City and attending a singles’ ward where he met his eternal sweetheart, Bonnie Gundersen. They were married for almost 48 years.
After they married in the Salt Lake Temple on April 12, 1974, they moved to Soda Springs, Idaho for a decade and then settled back in Salt Lake to raise their three daughters – Rachel, Sarah, and Amber. David and Bonnie devoted their life together to loving each other, their family, God, and the Church.
David was a man of great religious faith and over the years he served in many different roles in the Church, including counselor in the bishopric, stake high counselor, and librarian. In particular, he loved befriending the little ones in the ward as a nursery teacher, he loved teaching gospel doctrine, and he and Bonnie felt very fortunate to serve three times in the Salt Lake Inner-City Mission.
An incredibly hard worker, David got a second bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Utah, and it was no accident that David chose careers in social work and psychiatric nursing because they enabled him to help the elderly, those with mental illness, and young people. A kind and sympathetic person, he always took deep interest in his clients and patients and gained great satisfaction from the work he did with them and the personal growth he got from them. One of his proudest early career moments was working with and setting up a basketball program for boys in the juvenile justice system in Idaho.
Even though David was a shy young man, his career and his church service helped him come out of his shell and he grew to love meeting new people. With great enthusiasm, he was always eager to welcome new neighbors to the street and new members to the ward. He treasured this community with all his heart.
But in the end, David loved nothing more than to be in his home. He enjoyed the simple pleasures and routines of life like listening to music, jogging around the neighborhood, doing yardwork, reading the scriptures with his wife, studying maps and atlases, corresponding with family and friends, and bantering with his children. He worked hard to overcome many challenges and obstacles to create a life of stability, dignity, meaning, and purpose. He is loved and remembered by many, but none more than his wife, daughters, and sons-in-law who are forever impacted and grateful for his time on this earth.
David is preceded in death by his father Jacob, his mother Violet, his brother Warren, his sister Virginia, and his mother and father in-law, Orson and Effie Gundersen.
David is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children Rachel and Alex Morot, Sarah Weber, and Amber and Sergio Mackay; siblings Gary (Karen) Weber; Linda (Norene) Weber; and Gayle (Brett) Baugh; and many wonderful in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
