David Thomas Holford
“Our Hero”
David Thomas Holford peacefully passed away on June 4, 2016 at the age of 60. He is survived by his wife Lori Holford, their children John Holford (Kelly Holford), Rebecca Larsson (Stephen Larsson), and his grandson Camden Larsson. Preceded in death by his father and mother Ralph and Janet Holford.
David was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ralph Erwin and Janet Black Holford. As an only child, he enjoyed playing the Trumpet all through Elementary School. Later, before attaining his Drivers’ License, David had a Private Pilot’s License and even passed the Commercial Pilot written exam. He graduated from South High School in 1974 and immediately joined the U.S. Army Reserves. Trained as a Helicopter Mechanic – he later worked as a Military Hospital Cook. He always said that it all worked out, because grease was the main ingredient in both jobs. He later served the U.S. Army full-time and was trained to launch an artillery-fired tactical nuclear missile (training that he was grateful he never had to use). He ultimately ended his career in the investments industry, the last 16 years of which were spent with Fidelity Investments. Also known as the “voice” of the Murray Silver Blades figure skating club, Dave found one of his true life passions in announcing and writing for the club’s yearly showcases and occasional local skating competitions. He truly enjoyed every minute of every hour spent working on these special events. Through all this, David was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He would always ensure the well-being of those around him, his kind heart being easily recognized by anyone who may cross his path. He looked for the good in people and for the bright side of life’s sticky and ugly situations. He took risks, worked hard, had a fun imagination, and laughed a lot. Most importantly, he loved his wife and family unconditionally. Having battled kidney cancer for over 4 years, overcoming multiple surgeries and harsh medications, David showed incredible spirit. He did not let the disease define him, being sure to lead as normal of a life as one could expect during this time. His steadfast dedication to his family and friends will always be remembered and the impression left on those around him will last a lifetime. We would like thank Dr. Justin A. Call and everyone at Utah Cancer Specialists. While Dr. Call is recognized in the field of Oncology, our family also recognizes him as a wise, caring and tender man – especially during the time he worked with David.
We would also like to thank Fidelity Investments, who has been especially good to David and his family throughout his fight against cancer. Special thanks to his hospice nurse Rachel, and all of the behind-the-scenes helpers at Hearts for Hospice for helping guide us through these last few months. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8 at the Memorial Mountain View Mortuary and Cemetery, 3115 East Bengal Blvd. (7800 S.) A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at the Mortuary and again one hour prior to the services.Service Information
