David Glenn Forsythe
September 4, 1938 – July 3, 2017
David’s family moved from Pennsylvania to Pasadena, where he graduated from high school in 1956 and joined the army who trained him for an Army Security Agency position. He was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippine Islands.
Upon leaving the army in 1959 he enrolled at UCLA. During his senior year he was recruited by the CIA and on June 15th, after graduation, he married Christina Forsythe and reported to headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The couple was assigned to Miami Beach in 1963 where David received additional training for an assignment as a Foreign Service Officer in Algiers, Algeria. He became a father in 1965. After two years in Algeria, they went to Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1967, he quit the CIA and returned to Pasadena and attended California State University in Los Angeles, majoring in Business Administration with an option in computer information systems. In 1969, he was hired by the Treasury Criminal Investigation Division in Los Angeles and his daughter Navina Dawn was born. He held various positions in the Los Angeles division until 1975 when he and Chris moved to San Francisco. There he was the Regional Analyst for the western division. During his post in San Francisco, David Scott and Reina Lianne were born.
In 1980, he was sent to Salt Lake City on temporary assignment as Utah’s Chief of Criminal Investigation. However, he and Chris accepted the responsibility of caring for ailing relatives. Not staying mobile cost him several positions like Interpol. He remained in Salt Lake until he retired in 1990 at the age of 53 (retirement was mandatory at age 55). At that time, he received the United States Department of Treasury’s highest career service award, the Albert Gallatin Award. He pursued several interests the next 10 years, including SETI, the Planetary Society, researching family history, holding a family reunion, and writing. He had several short stories published. Various health problems began in late 1997 and continued to plague him, periodically interfering with his plans for his retirement. His comfort was a 3 pound Pomeranian who tried to protect him from anyone disturbing his rest.
He traveled when he could, visiting Jamaica, Hawaii, and Costa Rica. In 2002, He started spending a month each year in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2017 was the first year his COPD and CRPS prevented that trip. David and Christina celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year. Though they always considered California home, happiness came from remaining near family. The times Chris had health problems, it was his daughter Navina, son-in-law Paul, and their three boys Tavin, Kael, and Brox who brought David to their home and used games and laughter to distract him from his pain. He also had his son David, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and their three pranksters Sinjin, Maisie, and Delilah visiting and watching movies with their grandfather. His daughter Reina, son-in-law Rich, and grandson Leo visited whenever possible. He loved the holidays when everyone was together as Navina had planned for this 3rd of July.
We knew he was ill, but his death was sudden and earlier than expected. It hurts not having him with us yet we’re glad he was surrounded by all those who loved him at the end. We are not having a memorial service but ask those whose life he influenced, to pause on September 4, 2017 and remember this man.
