Darrel Young Rushton

November 20, 1930 — June 30, 2019

Darrel was born November 20, 1930 in East Ely, Nevada to Jack Louis Rushton and Vera Bertell Young. He was the second of four sons. He was raised and attended school in Ely, Nevada. Darrel attended Brigham Young University where he fell in love with LeAnn Clegg who was his landlord’s (Joseph and Ruth Clegg) daughter. They were married in the Manti Temple in 1953 and were married for more than 66 years. Darrel graduated from BYU and joined the US Army in 1953 to serve during the Korean War.
He began teaching in Murray School District in 1955 and taught there for 35 years. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Utah. Darrel was a great athlete and was actively involved in sports in the Midvale area for many years. He has always been a die-hard BYU football fan and held season tickets there from 1955 until 2017. He was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many callings there. Darrel was also a great singer and sang in many places.
Darrel and LeAnn raised 7 children together. He has always been an amazing dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. Darrel is survived by his loving wife, LeAnn, Dave Rushton (Maureen), Julie Rushton, Jeff Rushton (Hazel), Hal Rushton (Sandy), Kent Rushton (Amy), Jay Rushton, Deb Rushton, 33 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, his brother Kim (Karleen), his sisters-in-law Arla Clegg, DaLee James, and JoAnn Rushton and brother-in-law Halvor Clegg(Miriam). He was preceded in death by his son Steve, his brothers Allen and Jake, brothers-in-law Wildon Clegg and Clayton Peterson, and sister-in-law Jolene Peterson.
A viewing will be held Friday, July 5, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT. Another viewing will take place Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 10:00 AM with a funeral to follow at 11:00, both at 10206 S 3200 W, South Jordan, UT. Interment is to follow at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery.
