Dan Oniki, son of Toichi and Shima Oniki, was born in Corinne, UT. A graduate of West High and the U of U, Dan was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster of Troop 84 until he entered the U of U Medical School. He remained close friends with his fellow med school classmates through the years. After his internship in Allentown, PA, he opened a practice in Park City, UT. Dan married Kazuko “Helen” Shimizu in 1952 and was active in Park City civic affairs: Kiwanis Club President and City Councilman. His residency in surgery prompted a return to Salt Lake City. He established his surgical practice in Cottonwood Heights, Holladay and Murray where he served his community for 50 years. A member of the LDS Church, Dan served in the Sunday School, the Stake High Council, and as a service missionary to the Thai-Laotian Branch with Helen.
Preceded in death by his brothers (Ben & Jun) and wife (Helen), Dan is survived by daughters Sue Ellen (Mark) Nakamura and Rebecca Oniki; grandchildren: Aaron & Cassandra Nakamura; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 27 at 1:00 PM, at the Big Cottonwood Stake Center, 1750 Spring Lane (5195 South), Salt Lake City, UT, where friends may call before the funeral from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM. A viewing will also be held there on Monday, May 26 from 5 to 7 PM. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, Cottonwood Heights. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.
