Dan E Jones

June 18, 1934 — November 2, 2018

“Utah’s Pollster” and professor extraordinaire, Dr. Dan E. Jones, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 from complications of congestive heart failure. He was 84 years old. Dan took his last breath surrounded by his loving family and had experienced an outpouring of love and respect from numerous friends, clients, former students, civic leaders and colleagues during his brief illness.
Dan was born a twin to Evan E. and Lillie Jones on June 18, 1934 in Ogden, Utah and raised in Pocatello, Idaho in a home that valued education and hard work. He graduated from Idaho State and earned a Masters and PhD from the University of Utah. He won awards as a skilled debater and was a passionate speaker.
Dan was highly regarded in many areas, but he was foremost a loving husband and father.
He and his wife of 43 years, Patricia, co-founded Dan Jones & Associates in 1980. The company grew to be one of the nation’s premier public opinion and market research firms, with the help of a talented staff. Dan and Pat worked side by side for 35 years. The company was sold to the Cicero Group in 2010, but Dan continued to work there as a consultant and adviser until his death.
Beneath his bluntness and dry wit, Dan had a heart of gold. He had a penchant for helping the little guy, the blue collar worker and the underdog. He served his country as a Captain and Company Commander in the U.S. Army.
Proficient in many areas, Dan was best known as the ultimate teacher and professor. Collectively, he taught 52 years at Granite and Bountiful High Schools and for decades at Utah State University and the University of Utah. Dan influenced literally thousands of young people to learn and appreciate civic engagement, the American Constitution, political history, voting and the importance of respecting those that serve in political office. Conversely, he expected those in political office to deserve that respect.
He missed only one class during the half century in education, when his siblings visited their native land, Wales. He expected the same dedication from his students. He taught large classes but knew each individual and noticed when they were absent. He made it clear that he expected students to be alert and to do well on his exams. Most of all, he wanted each one to succeed.
Dan was a huge sports fan and loved everything U of U. He served as Interim Director of the Hinckley Institute, which he loved dearly.
Dan was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of the Cottonwood 14th Ward. A High Priest, he served in many callings during his lifetime.
Dan married Elizabeth Ann Weiser in 1956. They were later divorced. He married Patricia Workman Scott in 1975. Together, Dan and Pat have blended a loving family of 7 children, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Dan is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their children, Mark (Jerilee) Jones, Leslie (Randy) Swartwood, Ondulyn Jones, Doug (Ann) Scott, Kelli (Chad) Rogers, Derek Jones, and Angela (Daniel) Nelson. He is also survived by his twin sister, Diane King, and brothers Evan E. Jones, Dr. Richard Dennis Jones and Dr. Robert David Jones. Preceded in death by his parents and siblings Mary Donna Jensen, Maureen Crandall and Helen Harwood.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, November 9th from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Cottonwood 14th Ward, 2080 East 5165 South (Highland Drive). Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 10 that 11:00 am at the same location. A viewing will be held at the ward from 9:00-10:30 am prior to the funeral services. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E. Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
