“Home at last”
Colleen Elaine Johnson passed away quietly the morning of April 25, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Our beautiful Colleen was born on February 21st, 1937 at the old Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Colleen’s family moved many times during her early childhood, but finally settled in the Liberty Park area of Salt Lake. She divided her time between home and her grandparent’s farm in Holiday where she spent many happy hours horseback riding, picking (and eating) fresh apples and pears from the family orchard. She absolutely adored her sweet Granny and any time spent with her was treasured. In warm weather you would find Colleen swimming in the creek or walking amongst the farm animals which she adored!
Colleen attended Hawthorne Elementary, where she met the love of her life and future husband, Bruce D. Johnson. They attended Lincoln Junior High and South High School together. After graduating in 1956, they married and started a family. As their family grew, they moved to the Granger/West Valley City area where they raised three sons (Michael, Steven and Christopher), welcomed grandchildren, great grandchildren and enjoyed their dream home for 45 years.
Colleen was an accomplished artist. She specialized in colorization of black and white photographic portraits. When her sons were young, she painted holiday scenes in downtown Salt Lake City department store windows for extra pocket money.
She was most happy when she was spending time with her family and friends, camping, backyard barbeques, birthdays – she loved entertaining. The holidays were her favorite time of year – from Halloween to Christmas, her home was a place of happiness, love and magic where everyone was welcome.
Her grandchildren spent many summers at her house, cultivating fond memories of Grandma, watching Sci-Fi movies on her big screen TV, going to the local swimming pool, riding bikes around her neighborhood and eating tuna fish sandwiches with potato chips for lunch on her back patio. One of the most special memories for all of them is why Grandma’s carry such big purses (Hint – it’s not to sneak enough candy to satisfy six kids into the dollar movie theater).
Colleen is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bruce, her son Christopher (D’Ann), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her parents and two beloved sons, Michael and Steven Johnson.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Pheasant Run Alzheimer’s Care Facility in South Jordan, Utah, and the hospice staff that attended to Colleen these last few weeks.
