CLARENCE JULES (C.J.) HOLTKAMP
1926 – 2019
Clarence Jules Holtkamp passed away on to his well-earned eternal rest on April 24, 2019 in Sandy, Utah. C.J. was born November 13, 1926 in Beaumont, Texas to William Edward Holtkamp and Hazel Julia Hoffman. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in China until he was discharged in 1946. After the war, he attended the University of New Mexico where he met his eternal companion, Karyl Irene Roberts. C.J. and Karyl were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 2, 1948 and were together for 57 years until her passing. In 2006 he married Marion Hanson.
After graduation from the University of New Mexico in 1949, he moved his little family to Houston, Texas, where he began a long and distinguished career as an electrical engineer. He and Karyl were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by wonderful neighbors in Houston and were baptized in 1951. Their marriage was solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple in 1954. C.J. was a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in a variety of ward and stake callings, including as a patriarch in Texas and Utah. He gave over one thousand patriarchal blessings. He and Karyl served a mission to Port Harcourt, Nigeria from 1995 to 1997. For several years he served as an instructor at the University of Utah Latter-day Saint Institute.
C.J. was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Eagle as a boy and as an adult he served as scoutmaster and in various district, council and national positions, including president of the Rio Concho Council and member of the National Explorer Scout Committee. His many awards in scouting include the Silver Beaver and the Silver Antelope. C.J. was an active member of the communities in which he lived. Along with being appointed an honorary sheriff’s deputy in dozens of counties in Texas, he served on the San Angelo, Texas City Commission.
More than anything else, C.J. was completely devoted to the Lord, his family and his fellow men and women. From his earliest childhood he was known for an impish but innocent sense of humor. He had a lifelong love of learning and passed on to his children a deep love of books.
C.J. is survived by his wife Marion Hanson Holtkamp; his sister Jeanne Elizabeth Holtkamp; his children James Arnold (Marianne Coltrin), Kenneth Wayne (Sharon Bonnett), Lorraine (Chuck Braun), Mary Lee (Kenneth Thomas), Susan Charlotte, Deborah (Robert Boulter), Julie Ann (David Simmons) and Beverly Joy (David Jones); 25 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother William Edward Holtkamp, his sister Charlotte Aleene Jones, his grandson Brent William Holtkamp and his great-granddaughter Avery Ann Ostergaard.
