Clara Johanna Bos Damm
1925 ~ 2021
Bountiful, Utah—Clara Johanna Agatha Bos Damm, 95, of Bountiful, Utah, passionate German, tenacious bargain shopper, ardent party attender, and a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ passed away peacefully on the afternoon of February 24, 2021 surrounded by her family from injuries sustained in a fall. She was born September 12, 1925 in Amsterdam, Holland and spent her formative years in Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1957. The only child of Cornelius Bos and Luise Flesch-Koenigs Roebruck and stepdaughter of Hans Roebruck.

Clara was raised on the French border in Saarbrucken, West Germany and was evacuated to Erfurt, East Germany in 1944. She then met and married her first husband, Walter Kurt Werner December 24, 1945. On December 26, 1945 she went into the hospital with a burst appendix and was hospitalized for three months.

In November of 1949, and five months pregnant, she escaped from East Germany across the border into West Germany. Her son Harold was born March 1950 in Wallerfangen, West Germany.

In 1952, while living in Saarbrucken she met the missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized in January of 1953 along with her mother. Her marriage to Walter ended in divorce, but the best gift he gave Clara, besides Harold, was his approval to join the church.

Clara met Friedrich Albin Damm while he was serving as a missionary in the Saarbrucken branch. Oma relished her friendships and the connections of this branch of the church. Clara and Fred were sealed in the Swiss temple in May of 1957. They then immigrated to the United States via boat out of France, endured the Asian flu while on board, landed in New York, and then took a bus across the country to California where they made their first home in Redondo Beach. Clara and Fred sold eggs door to door in the evenings after Fred worked all day as a warehouse stocker for a plumbing company. Clara also cleaned houses and did child-care. Her proudest moment was that within a year they had saved up enough money to buy their first home. Her testimony of tithing is her legacy.

In December of 1959, Clara and Fred welcomed Gary Fred into their home. For the next 17 years they built a plumbing business, enjoyed the sunshine of California and created lasting friendships. In 1966 Clara became a citizen of the United States and in 1977 they immigrated once again to Bountiful, Utah where Clara was able to build her dream home.

Clara spent many years indexing German records, as well as a short stint as the nursery leader in her ward. Clara and Fred were members of the German Chorus Harmone and enjoyed their friendships with the German American Society – especially the yearly outings for Octoberfest at Snowbird. Clara and Fred loved to dress up and dance together.

Another great passion was Clara’s need to travel which she has passed on to her posterity! Clara and Fred traveled the world, usually by cruise line. Clara and Fred served a two-year mission together to the Munich, Germany mission from 1998-2000.

She was an amazing cook, immaculate housekeeper, and studious bookkeeper. She could track her finances to the penny. Clara’s last legacy was her compassionate care of Fred who died of Alzheimer’s in 2013 and her undying devotion to Harold.

Clara is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, and her great-granddaughter Abigail Stott. She is survived by Harold Werner, Gary and Sue Damm – her grandchildren Cierra and Tyson Edwards, Meghan and Tyler Stott, and Jason and Kimber Damm, as well as her great-grandchildren Kaitlin Stott, Eli Edwards, and Brooks Damm.

We love you most, Oma!
