Clair Ezra Davenport

September 29, 1924 — August 28, 2018

On August 28, 2018 Clair returned to his Heavenly Father and to join his sweetheart Mathel, son Deon, and many loved ones. He was a good and faithful servant who completed his earthly tasks with honor.
Clair was born on Sept. 29, 1924 to Ezra Sperry and Martha Arminta Higley Davenport in Woodville, Idaho. He was the youngest of 10 children. He graduated from Shelly High School and later attended Utah State University and graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He married his love Mathel, in the Idaho Falls Temple on Aug. 5, 1947.
Clair was a kind, generous, loving person. He grew up in a farming community and worked hard on his family’s small farm. Clair enjoyed high school and joined the boxing team to learn self-defense skills. He had a love of learning that continued through his life.
He served his country proudly in the Navy ROTC Reserves and active duty in the Air Force. He attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict, and received a service award from the Korean Government. After completing his military service Clair moved his family to the Midvale, Union area and then later settled in the Butler, Cottonwood Heights area, where he and Mathel raised their eight children.
Clair worked as a landscape architect, draftsman, architect, and engineer. He was able to earn his architect license. After accomplishing this goal, he was able to do architectural designing, which he loved. He worked for many companies in his career including Utah State Government and the US Government. After retirement he worked at designing a more effective wind/energy system.
Clair’s love of the gospel and his Lord Jesus Christ sustained him and his family through many adversities and difficult times. He loved the church and held many, varied positions. He truly loved serving and especially at the Jordan River Temple where he completed 15 years of service. He loved singing in numerous Ward and Stake choirs.
Throughout his life, and especially in his later life, Clair wanted to share his love with everyone around him. His cheerful, kind attitude along with his love of singing and beautiful voice, uplifted so many. He was able to sing with the Beehive Statesmen for a time and loved every minute. In his stay at the Veteran’s Nursing home, he filled the halls with renditions of his happy music.
Preceded in death by his wife Mathel, and son Deon.
He is survived by his remaining children: Ravenna (Henry) Hanft, Mark (Sheri) Davenport, Karen (Randy) Young, Edward (Vicky) Davenport, Eric ( Liz) Davenport, Doreen (Brent) Christenson, and Paul (Kodi) Davenport. 34 Grandchildren, and many Great Grand-children.
His life was devoted to his religion, his family, and his country. He loved the outdoors as well and our family spent many happy times camping and on outings. We as a family also spent many, many hours taking “the scenic way” on these outings. Now it is time for your final outing, you have served so long and so well. We love you so much. Happy trails to you until we can be with you again.
We would like to especially thank the William E. Christofferson Veterans Nursing Home staff, friends, and the LDS Veterans Branch and volunteers for their kind and loving care of Clair.
