Christopher S. Metos

June 28, 1922 — April 26, 2019

Our beloved Father, Grandfather and good friend, Christopher S. Metos, age 96, died on April, 26, 2019 of complications incident to age.  He was born June 28, l922, in Scofield, Carbon County, UT, the youngest child of George Achilles Metos and Asemo Kouvalis Metos.
Chris married Helen Patsuris, daughter of Telemahos and Tasia Patsuris, July l0, l955, in the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral, Salt Lake City, UT.  They were the parents of four children: Sylvia, George, Tom and Paula (John) Saltas, all of Salt Lake City, UT.   He had eight grandchildren: Pete, Eleni and Michael Saltas; Kassandra, Nicholas and Melissa Metos; Christopher and Dimitri Metos.
Chris had five older siblings.  Harry G. Metos, Salt Lake City, UT, Jayne M. Coleman, Salt Lake City, UT, Tom G. Metos, Salt Lake City, UT, Cora M. Fisher, Antioch, CA, and Mary M. Higley, Fairfax, VA.  He also had numerous nieces and nephews.
Chris graduated from West High School, Salt Lake City, and from the University of Utah.  He was a graduate of the United States Infantry Officers Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia, December, l944.  He proudly served with the US Army in Italy during World War II.  He continued his military affiliation with the Army Reserves and with the Utah Army National Guard Reserves, retiring with the rank of Major.  Chris was one of the original founders of the highly acclaimed Utah National Guard Military Intelligence Linguist Company.
During the launching of the Interstate Highway System in the United States, Chris served as the Information Officer in the Utah State Department of Highways from l958 to l969.  He edited the department’s monthly publication and created numerous news conferences and documentary films.  Active in the Utah Junior Chamber of Commerce, he served as State Vice President and Editor of its monthly publication, the “Utah Jaycee,” and was awarded the coveted “Distinguished Service Award,” (DSA).
Active in the Greek Orthodox Church, locally and nationally, he served as Vice President of the Salt Lake City Parish Council. He was also the Founder and President of the Hellenic Cultural Association/Museum/Library for eighteen years; President of the National Association of Hellenic Cultural Museums; and past President of the Society of Athanasios Diakos, one of the oldest ethnic Greek fraternal organizations in America.  He was also responsible for organizing the Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA).
Chris arranged reunions of the University of Utah ROTC Class of 1943.  These reunions commemorated the activation of the class for military service during World War II.
The Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 9:30 AM and the Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral.  The Cathedral is located at 279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84l01. Interment will be conducted at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, UT.
The family wishes to thank Chris’s many relatives, friends, and neighbors for their loyal, inspirational support during his illness.  His Goddaughter, Elaine Zambos, has always been very kind and attentive to Dad.  She never missed an opportunity to shower him with holiday gifts and take him to lunch.  The family is also grateful to Shirlene Hunt (CNA), Giancarlo Luritta (CNA), and Becky Price (Nurse) of Summit Home Health and Hospice.  And finally, many thanks to Levy Suarez for his twice daily, compassionate, caregiver services.
