Charles Wendell Hathaway

March 5, 1944 — June 19, 2020

Charles Wendell Hathaway, age 76 of Murray, Utah passed away on June 19, 2020 in his home. Wendell was born March 5, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lorenzo Dee and Ruth Russell Hathaway. He was the third child in his family of ten and met his wife, Kathryn Jane Featherstone Hathaway through his sister Diana and church activities. He was a tease and sent roses to Kathy before a date without signing his name and laughed as Kathy and her mom tried to figure out if he was the one to send them without asking him outright.
Wendell and Kathy were married August 31, 1967 and welcomed six children into their home. Wendell desired to go to University of Utah to become a lawyer but found a profession the summer before school that he absolutely loved quite by accident and it changed his future course. Wendell worked that summer for a surveying crew and fell in love with the mathematics and outdoor nature of the work. Wendell spent many years outside surveying, hunting, fishing, and hiking. He traveled all over Utah, and much of Wyoming and Idaho as a Professional Land Surveyor. He specialized as a Right of Way Surveyor and began to work more in the office. He worked for the private sector, the State of Utah Department of Transportation Region Two, and the Salt Lake County Surveyor’s Office.
Wendell served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Netherlands where he learned to speak several dialects of the Dutch language. He and his older brother served in the same mission and were even companions for a time. Wendell was a true disciple of Jesus Christ and never denied his testimony of Christ. After his mission he joined the Army National Guard and was a Linguistic Intelligence Analyst and Interrogator because of his mastery of the Dutch language.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, and children Susan (Alan), Kirk (Jennilyn), Christy (Bud), Wendell Roy (Carrie), Tina (Lynn), and Timothy (Mary). He was a good dad, but his true calling was being a Grandpa! He has 23 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren with another one on the way. Wendell loved to spoil his grandkids with anything and everything from their own jars of peanut butter and pickles to toys and sweets. He got a kick out of watching his grandchildren, especially when they were one to five years old. He thought they were cutest when they “got their neck” (could hold their heads up and interact). He loved sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren and could be found teaching them in the garden or playing with snails. He enjoyed sitting out on the front porch and in the backyard visiting with family and friends. He loved greatly and was greatly loved.
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo and Ruth Hathaway; granddaughter JaCee; daughter-in-law Jackie Hathaway, in-laws Roy and Ruth Featherstone; sister’s and their spouses Cheryl (Keith) Jenkins and Debra (George) Simpson, and brother-in-law Keith Harmes.
