Charles Mont Mahoney

September 4, 1922 — December 30, 2018

Our father, Charles Mont Mahoney, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2018 at home, surrounded by family. He was born on September 4, 1922 to J Rolla Mahoney and Effie Inger Jensen Mahoney in Brigham City, Utah.  He attended school in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Salt Lake City, Utah; graduating from East High School and the University of Utah, class of 1943.
After completing Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and completed Battery Executives School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was trained in armored artillery and served in World War II as a forward observer in a tank and saw combat under General George S. Patton in France, Luxemburg, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria, including the Battle of the Bulge.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Before going overseas, he married Ruth Ellen Evans on April 30, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. To this union were born five children:  Edmund Mont (Carla) Mahoney, Connie (Ross) Jones, Merry Lucretia (Kenneth) Jones, Ellen Jean (Steven) Hanks, and Bruce Evans Mahoney, 23 grandchildren, and 54 great grandchildren and counting.  He reminded us often what a blessing we were to him.
He was involved in the construction industry for over 60 years including Red Cedar Mill; C. Mont Mahoney Construction; and Utah Construction and Development, Inc., serving as President from 1973 to 1991. He received the Eric W. Ryberg Award from the Associated General Contractors of Utah for service to the construction industry.
His company built many projects, but his favorites included chapels and the Samoan, Tongan, and Chicago Temples for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He served faithfully in callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Elders Quorum President, Bishopric, High Council, and Scouting. He served as Superintendent of Volunteer Labor in the building of the East Millcreek Stake Center.
His service to the Boy Scouts of America included 17 years as Scoutmaster, Varsity Team Coach, and Explorer Advisor. He also served in the Great Salt Lake Council as District Chairman, Chairman of Properties, Vice President, and on the Executive Board.  He served on the National Council of the BSA as a member of the National Camping Task Force and in International Scouting for Russian and Siberian Relationships.
He received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. He attended Wood Badge in 1972 and served on the staff of five Wood Badge courses and as Course Director (Scoutmaster) in 1978.
His wife and family supported him in all his Scouting activities. His children and grandchildren loved to camp with grandpa.  Red Castle, Kings Peak, the Wind Rivers, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Teton National Park were among his favorites.  He camped outdoors for over 800 nights with family, military, and Scouting.  He “had more joy and fun than anybody.”
He had many choice friends from Scouting, business, civic, and church activities. He was active with the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.
His home and cabin were built with love and help from family and friends.
He and his eternal companion served a mission for the Church to Ireland in 1991 and 1992, the home of his ancestors. He will always be Irish while still being patriotic to the United States of America.
He testified frequently to the truthfulness of the restored Gospel, the Book of Mormon, and the sacred mission of Joseph Smith.
He survived the Depression; World War II; sleeping in tents, foxholes, and snow caves; and a heart attack.
He often expressed his gratitude for his parents, family, and a wonderful supportive and loving wife.
He endured faithfully to the end.
Mont is survived by his 5 children as mentioned above; his brother Allyn (Connie) Mahoney, and his sister Elaine Kistiakowsky. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his parents and his brothers Stan (Jedda), and Lynn (Marva), and brother-in-law George Kistiakowsky.
