Charles Howard Alvey, Jr.

August 1, 1934 — April 5, 2022

Chuck, age 87 much loved husband, father, grandfather, great, great great grandfather, brother, and friend hiked on to the next peak on Tuesday April 5th, 2022.  He surrounded by his family in person and virtually. Chuck served faithfully as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life.
Chuck was born on 08/01/1934 to C. Howard Alvey Sr. and Scytha Solena Barney in Escalante, UT. He spent his childhood amongst the red rocks of Escalante, riding horses and spending time on his Grandparents property. He moved with his parents and siblings to Holladay UT where he later met his first love Sharon Tuft. Chuck graduated from West High school then he joined the Navy at age 18 and relocated to San Diego, CA. In 1952 while stationed with the US Navy he got his start in Data Processing as a key punch operator, tab operator, and manager of the coding section. Chuck and Sharon kept in touch through regular letters to one another.
Chuck took a leave in July 1953 and returned to Holladay and eloped with Sharon to the Logan, UT Temple on July 23. They returned to San Diego together and started their family. After the birth of their two oldest sons, Eric & Douglas, they returned to Holladay where they were blessed with 4 more children: Wendy, Sidnee, Roger and Paige. They lived in Holladay for 28 years creating family memories and building friendships that lasted their lifetime. While in Holladay Chuck served in Scouting, Elders quorum, in the Bishopric, and as Bishop. He was a much-loved mentor to the youth.
Chuck started building a home in Sandy, UT and with Sharon and his youngest daughter, Paige, they relocated in July of 1983. He worked hard on this unique lot to find places for fruit trees, a garden, Shenny’s tulips, a trampoline, and of course a basketball court. Many rich family memories took place within those walls. He continued his faithful service in the church by serving as the ward clerk, in youth groups, and teaching temple preparation classes with Sharon. Chuck tenderly cared for Sharon during her battle with cancer and we said “till we meet again” in December 1992.
Chuck was introduced to Karla Enniss in 1993 and started to romance her with flowers and poetry. They were married on June 24, 1994 and were later sealed in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.  He was fortunate to find love again and to make his dream of a bigger family come true. Karla joined our family with Kelli, Troy, Toby, Travis, and Tyson. His heart and love were enough to accept them as his own. Chuck & Karla lived in Sandy, Draper and settled in Midvale, UT. They worked hard to maintain family traditions for each side of the family and brought us together for our historical July 4th breakfast up Millcreek Canyon. Chuck and Karla enjoyed studying the gospel together, visiting with family, and taking rides in the mountains together.  Chuck served as High Priest Group leader and continued his valiant service as a Home Teacher/Minister.  If he could not make it to their home, he invited them into his.
In 2012 Chuck had an accident that ultimately caused him to become disabled. Karla was his sole caregiver over these last 10 years. It was not always easy, and Chuck knew it was becoming harder and harder as the years went by. He often shared his love for her and his appreciation for all she did for him, it bothered him to feel like a burden. We all recognize Karla’s sacrifice and appreciate her for all she has done for our Dad.
Chuck enjoyed a nearly 40-year career at Beneficial Life Insurance Company. He held positions such as Unit Record Operator, Director of Data Processing, and Director of Policy Owner Service. He cultivated lasting friendships during his time there and maintained contact with many until his last days. He was an active member of the DPMA and worked on the Call Committee and served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors. He was awarded a certificate by the Life Office Management Association for completion of Life Insurance Operation and Fundamentals course. In 1972 Chuck was elected as president of Life 70 Users Group.
Chuck loved the outdoors. Mt. Olympus and the High Uinta’s were his second home from the time he was a kid. He shared his love of hunting, fishing, hiking and camping with his family, neighbors and friends.
Chuck enjoyed a good 5am basketball game with his buddies of many years. He perfected the Alvey hook shot to the wonderment of many young players trying to guard him. He did not hold back no matter how old he got and arrived home many times with a black or injured eye. Even after leaving Holladay, he rallied groups in Sandy and Draper.
When Chuck was not a playing sports you could find him cheering in the stands for brothers, sons, daughters, and grandkids. He was the best to have in your section – one and all recognized his whistle of encouragement. Chuck also boxed in the Navy and belonged to the Holladay boxing club. In 1949 he had the opportunity to participate in the Golden Gloves tournament held in Ogden, UT.
Chuck and his siblings had a very special bond, they cared lovingly for their parents as they aged, they met monthly for lunch, and he made the effort to contact them each week. He loved them all so much.
