Charles Brown

August 7, 1939 — March 15, 2021

Charles (Chuck) Ross Brown, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully at River Meadows Senior Living in Alpine, Utah on March 15, 2021. The first of four children, Chuck was born on August 7, 1939 in Mesa, Arizona to Charles and Ellen Brown.

Chuck’s father, a career Air Force pilot who served in WWII, offered Chuck and his siblings the opportunity to see and live in many exciting places throughout the world such as Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands and in Chateauroux, France. Chuck always felt that he had an amazing, adventurous upbringing and cherished those fun memories. He especially enjoyed reminiscing about his time spent in France where he excelled in high school athletics, especially football and basketball. He fondly recalled making a cross-country trip through France with his friends on their Vespas.

In about 1961 Chuck met his future wife, Judith Rossiter, in a hospital in Pasadena, California where he was recovering from a surgical procedure. Judy happened to be one of the nurses attending to him. He knew the moment he laid eyes on her that he was going to ask her out on a date. Although Judy didn’t quite feel the same for him at first, in time he managed to “scare off” her other suitors and win her heart. Chuck and Judy were first married in the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Pasadena in June 1963, and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Over the years, they welcomed five children. Chuck shared his love of action and adventure with his children as they grew up. There was never a shortage of fun: motorcycles, snowmobiles, campers, skis, boats, and even a Hobie Cat catamaran that tipped over more than once in Willard Bay. While Judy kept her feet firmly planted on the ground, Chuck made sure his children experienced many adventures.

Chuck’s career was the car business. After his father retired from the Air Force and established Brown Chevrolet in Chehalis, Washington Chuck helped him manage the business for several years. Having gained valuable experience in running a dealership, Chuck then moved his family north to Issaquah where he established his own dealership, Charlie Brown Chevrolet. After running a thriving dealership there for about four years, the automobile industry fell on hard times due to the OPEC oil embargo of the 1970s, and Chuck was forced to close his doors. He relocated his family to Bountiful, Utah where over the years he worked in management positions for Duane Brown Chevrolet, Stephen Wade Pontiac-Mazda, and Wagstaff Toyota. Eventually he opened his own used-car business, Charlie Brown Motors.

In the winter of 1995, Chuck suffered heartbreaking loss when, after 30 years of marriage, Judy succumbed to breast cancer. He later married Suzanne Warner (1995-2016) and they welcomed a son, Wesley.

Chuck was an accomplished golfer. He enjoyed weekly golf games with a group of men whom he counted among his dearest friends. Their favorite destination was the golf course in Tooele. Many hours spent in friendly competition, laughter, and camaraderie helped him get through difficult times during his later years. Friendships were always important to Chuck.
In 2018, as he entered the advanced stages of Parkinson’s Disease, Chuck relocated to River Meadows Senior Living in Alpine where he could receive the care and assistance he needed as well as being in close proximity to his two youngest daughters and their families. During his three years there, he became good friends with a number of residents and grew to love the wonderful staff members and the facility he called home. Over the winter, Chuck’s condition deteriorated rapidly. By February he had become bedridden, suffering numerous seizures which left him barely able to eat or communicate. Soon after, he was placed on Hospice care.

Chuck is survived by his sister Ingrid Rees, his brother Jim Brown, his former wife Suzanne Brown, his six children, Ellen (Dave) Ririe, Doug (Kendra) Brown, Brad Brown, Julie (Ronnie) Eames, Aubrey (Heath) Lawrence, Wesley (Alexis) Brown, 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family would like to give thanks to the wonderful staff at River Meadows Senior Living for their outstanding care. A special thanks goes to the manager, Dara Merrill, whose compassion and friendship were treasured by Chuck during his stay.
