Chanda Srey

November 27, 1954 — August 18, 2024

Our loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Chanda Srey, passed away peacefully in her home on August 18, 2024, after a long hard-fought battle with diabetes.

Chanda was born on November 27, 1954, in Kampong Cham, Speu, Cambodia to Loch Srey and Khay Than. Chanda had full hearing when she was born however, in her childhood years she developed a virus that caused her to lose her hearing permanently. She grew up in Cambodia helping her family work their farm.

Her Father, Loch, was a schoolteacher, Army Commander and Mayor. Knowing the Khmer Rouge wanted to eliminate all educated people, the family knew they would need to make a tough decision to leave everything they owned behind for a new country. That fateful night occurred in 1975; her parents made the decision to flee Cambodia to keep everyone safe from the Khmer Rouge. Little did they know that the Khmer Rouge had arrived the next morning after they left. The family remained in Thailand until their Visas and sponsorship was approved, arriving in Utah June of 1976.

As a 17-year-old in a brand-new country, Chanda attended school at the Utah School for Deaf and Blind in Ogden where she learned signed language and received her GED. She and her family lived in various cities across the Wasatch Front, until they moved to Taylorsville in 1986 living there for 30 years. Chanda spent the last 8 years in West Valley City with her family.

On October 12,1995 Chanda married Veasna Mut in a big traditional wedding in Cambodia. Chanda loved traveling back to Cambodia with her family throughout the years. Chanda and Veasna had 1 daughter, Isabela. Chanda always wanted to have more children. When Isabela married Derek, she was beyond excited to welcome a son into the family. In 2023 Isabela and Derek moved their family into Chanda and Veasna’s home to help take care of her. Having her kids and grandkids, Mavis and Gordon, living with her gave Chanda renewed joy in life as she looked forward to playing with them daily. Little did anyone know how much Chanda would grow to love Gus and Nala, Chanda’s dog-grandbabies. Taking care of Gus and Nala gave Chanda a sense of pride. Being a mom was her favorite roll in life, however being called Grandma was her favorite title. Chanda always loved being around her family at gatherings and seeing everyone.

Chanda loved to get dressed up and was always ready to smile for any camera that was ready to take her picture. Her favorite daytime shows include The Price is Right and Days of Our Lives. She always went on walks throughout the neighborhood and when it got too hard to go outside, she wore out the flooring in the living room as she would take laps inside her home.

Chanda was preceded in death by her Father, Loch; Mother, Khay; Brother, Lakina; Brother, Poav. She is survived by her Husband, Veasna; Brother, Ponnarith (Marie); Sister, Melissa; Sister, Sarah (Bobby); Sister, Saudi (Alex); Daughter, Isabela (Derek); Grandbabies, Mavis and Gordon; Dog Grandbabies, Gus and Nala; Nieces, Mellina (Austin), Brittani (KC), Chance, Ariana; Nephews, Ryan, Trevor and Dylan.
