Carolyn Redd Derrick passed away June 19, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. She was born, the second of five children, in 1933, to Ernest Lamar Redd Sr. and Anna Lucille Huish in Colonia Juárez, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. She met her eternal companion, Lee Derrick, in El Paso, Texas. They were married for time and all eternity in 1953.
For a girl born in a tiny town in Mexico, she had many life experiences that sound as if they came straight out of a movie script. At 11 she went on cattle drive, carrying a small calf that couldn’t keep up, over her saddle. As a teenager she met Henry J. Eyring, the famous physicist, when she presented a book report at a school assembly. As an adult she met and dined with, such famous celebrities as Henry Kissinger, Michael Landon, Ernest Borgnine, Roger Daltrey, and Pete Townsend, when she attended the Carousel Ball.
As a young girl, she developed a lifelong love of reading. She spent many hours on road trips and lazy summer afternoons reading to the whole family. A blessing we will never forget.
Carolyn was a skilled craftswoman who could knit and crochet as fast as a machine, without even looking at what she was doing. She made quilts for many family members and friends, with stitches so even people thought she had used a sewing machine. She tatted beautiful lace, including an exquisite altar cloth for the Sealing Room in the Denver Temple. Her cross stitch and stained glass creations still adorn our home.
She was an inveterate puzzle solver; solving New York Times crosswords, cryptograms, and word jumbles, usually in less than half the time allotted.
She served in many church callings, but her favorite was in the Name Extraction Program in Denver. There, she mined microfilmed records from Spanish speaking countries for births, marriages, and deaths. By the time she retired from that calling, she’d been responsible for the submission of over 250,000 names for the blessings of temple ordinances.
She is joining her husband Lee, parents Lamar and Lucille, her sisters Anna and Janet, brother Lamar Jr., daughter Kim, and many other family members and dear friends. She is survived by her brother Mike, her daughters Karen and Kelly, as well as many nieces and nephews. So many people will miss her, though we will never be without her loving presence, or the wonderful things she taught us.
