Carolyn Hay Garff

July 9, 1938 — December 21, 2020

Carolyn Hay Garff, 82, passed away of natural causes at her home in West Jordan on Dec. 21, 2020.
Carolyn was born July 9, 1938, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Leland Franklin and Gwendolyn Simmons Hay. She graduated in 1956 from East High School and married Gordon Hal Garff in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 4, 1957. Before becoming a mother, she worked as an X-ray technician at Holy Cross Hospital.
She loved to serve and did so in many capacities. She especially enjoyed her time in the Primary organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With her husband she served as a full-time missionary in the Utah Salt Lake City Mission. Later, she was a missionary at LDS Business College.
Carolyn’s love for sunflowers matched her sunny disposition. She had a warm, welcoming personality and a fun sense of humor. As a caring mother and grandmother, she went to a lot of effort to make holidays (especially Christmas) exciting and special for everyone. An avid reader, she loved to learn about a variety of topics, especially British history. She had a sharp mind and a remarkable memory, making her practically unbeatable at trivia games and a wiz at Jeopardy. She enjoyed crafts, particularly plastic canvas and other kinds of needlework.
One of her favorite activities was going on trips, which years ago included camping and motorcycle riding in the desert or mountains with family and friends. In earlier days she also enjoyed bowling, an activity her husband introduced her to and that she became very skilled at—even surpassing him eventually. Watching classic movies from the golden age of Hollywood was another favorite pastime, and in her later years she especially looked forward to regular lunch outings with friends.
Above all, she was devoted to her family. Her concern for loved ones often made her a worrier, but she found great joy in being part of their lives and in supporting them in their activities and endeavors. As a widow, she was especially grateful for the care and companionship of her only daughter (her pal and kindred spirit).
Carolyn is survived by her sons, Gordon Lee (Charlette) Garff and Garrett Hal (Melinda) Garff; daughter, Amanda Garff; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Geraldine Hay Kelly.
