Carol Fowler

August 23, 1945 — May 16, 2020

Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Carol Marjorie Mansell Fowler, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 23, 1945 to Lollieta Alva Anderson and Lloyd Blood Mansell. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Carol graduated from South High School in 1963 and from the University of Utah in Elementary Education in 1967. She married Victor Lee Fowler in the Salt Lake City Temple, December 16, 1966. Together they had 7 amazing children.
Carol was gifted and talented in so many ways. Despite her immense talent and abilities, she never lost focus of what mattered most to her. At the top of that list was her husband and 7 children. She was the best mother and wife anyone could imagine. She had a very special way of making sure her family knew how much she loved and appreciated them. She definitely knew how to live the best version of her life and her example showed the way for others to do the same.
Though being an excellent wife and mother was her first priority, she was also a very competent educator and specialized in Elementary Education. She taught many of her years at Westbrook Elementary school. She took great pride in her profession and was a very dynamic and innovative teacher. Many of her students still comment today about the profound impact she had on their lives.
As a top-notch teacher who designed innumerable lesson plans, she had flawless writing and penmanship. She used this talent as she wrote dozens of letters to her children during their service as LDS missionaries across the globe. Her children reflected often on those letters, which contained encouragement, humor and inspiration. Her children always knew her to be patient, selfless, nurturing and as loving as they come. Her quick wit always kept things light.
Carol is also survived by loving and supportive siblings. They describe her as humble, down-to-earth and always thoughtful of others and their feelings. She was always happy, warm and had a bright smile on her face. Even at an early age, everything in her life was always in place. She had a great sense for fashion, without being over the top. Her brothers can’t remember a time that she got into trouble growing up. She was a peaceful soul at her core and
never took part in arguments as a child and teenager. That polished and composed temperament only got more refined as she progressed into adulthood. Though she was shy and unassuming, as a sister, she had a profound understanding of life and relationships and could always be trusted and relied upon.
As many intelligent people often are, Carol was very organized. Her house was always clean and tidy. Keeping a clean and safe home was certainly difficult with 7 energetic kids, but Carol had a way of making difficult things and tasks in life seem effortless. Her faith and love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ sustained her and nobody was a stronger or more valiant disciple of our Savior. She enjoyed her church callings and was diligent in serving in Primary, Young Women’s and the Relief Society on numerous occasions throughout her life. All who were fortunate to know her well describe her as an angel on earth, with an array of Christ-like qualities and attributes.
She knew how to recharge her batteries with happy and healthy social interactions. She was often seen walking around the neighborhood with her friends, with smiles on their faces and laughter in their voices. Nobody was a better, non-judgmental friend than her. Early, on any given Saturday morning, while everyone else in the house was sleeping, she could be found hard at work in her impressive garden. She loved gerber daisies, irises and tulips. Those were her favorites, but her garden prominently displayed many varieties of plants and flowers. During her personal time, if Carol wasn’t gardening, she was reading. She was a voracious reader, sometimes for hours at a time, fueled by Diet Coke. Many would say her love of Diet Coke was her only known vice. She loved playing tennis with her husband early on in their marriage and also played competitive tennis together. She never missed out on an
opportunity to enjoy the simplicities of life.
She had such a grounded perspective and life philosophy that guided her choices and actions. She was known to pre-clean the house before hired cleaning help arrived, just to make sure the job she paid them to do wasn’t too difficult. She was always in great physical condition, maintained a beautiful appearance and never placed undue emphasis or value on material things. Her true treasures in life were her relationships and in that way she was always a very
rich person.
Although she will be missed, we recognize the Lord’s tender mercies in receiving her back to her heavenly home.
She is survived by her seven children Rebecca Maready (David), David Fowler (Stacie), Spencer Fowler (Cynthia), Ryan Fowler (Shelby), Ben Fowler (Kira), Lindsey Shumway (Johnny) and Richard Fowler (Caitlin) and 25 grandchildren with one on the way; brothers Alma Mansell and David Mansell; sisters Janet Bird and Louise Tayler. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kent Mansell, and her granddaughter Morgan Fowler (Ben and Kira).
