Carol Fern “Gigi” Macomb

December 10, 1926 — August 15, 2018

Carol FERN “GiGi” MaComb, 91, of Midvale, UT, passed away in her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, after a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer. She was born in Richfield, UT on December 10, 1926 to Arthur Richard Leslie Bird and Madge Jones. She is survived by two daughters: Carol Mehr and Tracy (Jamie) Clendenen and three sons: Robert (Debbie) Mehr, Ron Mehr, and Brent (Patty) Mehr. She is preceded in death by two sons: David (Lindi) Mehr, Charlie (Marcia) MaComb, and daughter-in-law: Susan Mehr. She had 7 children, 24 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Her favorite hobbies were golfing and bowling, because she said they were a challenge. She liked that you could golf in the summer and bowl in the winter, and she never rented a golf cart, because she liked the exercise and walking. She also loved playing bingo at the Murray Senior Center, doing the morning newspaper crossword puzzle every day, traveling, cruises, and shopping in thrift stores. She had been a Shriner for over 40 years. She had the BEST sense of humor and was always the life of the party. She really did live a long, full life.
On a trip to the Great Wall of China, she took an alpine slide car from the top of the Great Wall down to the very bottom, and while stepping off, she tripped and broke her shoulder. She traveled home without any pain medication more than Tylenol. She was tough as nails!
She always had orange dreamsicles in the freezer, Coca Colas in the fridge, nuts and candy on the counter, and secret candy drawers in the kitchen. A giant gumball machine sat in the corner next to her kitchen table, and every grandchild and neighborhood kid knew they could walk in without knocking to grab one at any hour of the day. Her open-door policy often left people stunned, because she never worried about anyone walking in on her in any way! Her favorite movie was the Sound of Music, because she said it was something she could really see happening; escaping out of the clutches of war—complete with romance. She had the most beautiful singing and talking voice and had the best “waker upper” voice if you ever slept over at her house (“Come on, come on get up, get out of bed, come on you sleepy head…”). She loved children, and they loved her. Even in her last days, she would become alert if there were children in the room, talk to them in her sweetest voice, hug them, and give them a kiss. She knew how to make the best homemade chicken noodle soup by boiling a whole chicken and adding every vegetable leftover in her fridge.
Fern always had Kleenex, candies, and her lipstick in her pockets, and sometimes a loose piece of gum or a mint. She could make anyone feel good, no matter what was going on in their lives and loved to take the lost soul in under her wings to lift them up.
One of the most treasured stories of her family were those of her encounters with the 50’s Big Band members like Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Sofia Lauren, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, and other stars. She had a way of charming people, and as the story goes, she met Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas. He came up to her table because Al Collins was there. Al was a DJ in Salt Lake City in the late 50’s and early 60’s who played Frank’s records. She always said that she thought Frank liked her because of her black hair and blue eyes. He had just broken up with Ava Gardener, and Fern thought she probably reminded him of her. What Frank didn’t know was that Fern was sitting at that table with her husband. Frank asked Fern if she’d like to come back stage after the show, and when she asked if her husband was invited too, Frank dropped it right there.
Heaven truly gained one of her generation’s best!!
We love you Mom, Grandma Gigi, and Aunt Fern, and we know you’re making everyone laugh with your wit and charm in heaven above.
