January 15, 2021 – May 12, 2021
Caleb Jay Goodger was a warrior for the 117 days he lived. He was born with a special heart that needed a lot of help. Though Caleb’s life was short, he was loved by everyone. He was surrounded by people that adored him constantly. He was gifted with the best big brother, Declan, who loved on him whenever he got the chance, who prayed for him nightly, and treated him tenderly. He was so incredibly strong, but his heart was sick.
Life in the hospital was challenging. There were several times Shanna and Ian thought they were going to lose Caleb and life became even more tenuous and precious every day, but God granted them miracle after miracle.
The last 15 days of Caleb’s life was magical. Ian and Shanna felt Holy Spirit was guiding them and surrounding them constantly. He brought the family so much joy. Caleb loved music therapy, his face would light up and he was so engaged. Shanna slept by him during blissful afternoon naps and Ian loved reading to him and rocking him to sleep. Caleb loved the only bath his parents were able to give him. They got to take him outside on Shanna’s birthday to see his big brother. They spent precious time together on that day, and were able to take a family picture. It is clear now that Jesus was calling Caleb home and was preparing Ian and Shanna.
Ian and Shanna took him home from the hospital on May 12th and had a glorious day with him. The morning they brought him home, Caleb’s hospital room was full of a beautiful fragrance that couldn’t be explain. At home, he spent time with his big brother Declan and his Gigi who got to hold him; everyone loved on him. They were able to spend time together finally as a family of four again. That night he went to be with Jesus. His passing was quick and merciful and he was surrounded by people who loved him.
The 237 days Ian and Shanna spent on this journey grew them in ways they never thought possible. They’ve grown closer as a family and have found strength they didn’t know they had. They learned to appreciate things that others take for granted. It has forever changed them.
They are so grateful for the medical staff at Primary’s that served little Caleb (people like Courtney who treated him like her own child, his favorite nurses Maddy, Emily, and Taylor, his PT Elise, his childlife specialist Jen, his surgeon Dr. Griffiths, who saved his life several times, and countless others) and the countless friends and family that rose up to support them. Shanna leaned on her mom who got her through a lot of hard moments—thank goodness for FaceTime. They have learned not to take anything for granted, and have very few regrets.
They thank you for the part you played in Caleb’s life. If you’d like to be of further support to their family, their extended family has created this site for that purpose: DreamList.com/for/4vb0js03tr
If you’d like to help fund research into congenital heart defects to help children like Caleb, they’d suggest contributing to: Children’s Heart Foundation
There will be a celebration of Caleb’s life on Saturday, May 22nd at New Creation Church at 10am. They would like anyone that has been impacted by Caleb’s story to come and be apart of the service. Caleb was full of joy and life and we would love to represent that by wearing colors at the service.
