Bryant Elbert Porter

November 30, 1953 — July 31, 2016

Bryant “Bry” Elbert Porter unexpectedly returned home to our Heavenly Father late Sunday night July 31, 2016 after an amazing day of boating and waterskiing with family. He was born November 30, 1953, in SLC, Utah, the son of Frances Brady and Elbert Heaton Porter.
Bryant leaves behind, and will never be forgotten by, his wife, Deanne; his children Lani (Dave), Nate, Emily (Jeff), Jason (Lydia); his grandchildren Bailey, Tyler, Alexis, and Elsa; his brothers Sherril (Lois) and Dwight (Trena); and his sister, Suzanne (Marcus), and brother-in-law, Elven. In eternity he is reunited with his parents, Elbert and Frances, his sister, Janice, and his grandson, Daniel.
Bryant had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was well known throughout the community for being a kind and caring man. He was very devoted to, and loved nothing more than, his family.
Bryant had an incredible sense of adventure and was always up for a challenge. His adventurous spirit led him to start several successful businesses that helped him support his family. It also sparked his interest in scuba diving through which he met the love of his life, Dee, at the dive shop where he took lessons. Right away they were drawn to each other, and she picked the cute guy with lamb-chop sideburns for her “buddy breathing” demonstration. From then on, they were inseparable. By the next October, he knew she was “the one” and he proposed to her underneath Donut Falls. After a short engagement, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on December 1, 1978. They had planned to honeymoon in St. George, but upon arrival, they realized they needed something more their speed and quickly left on a fun-filled road trip to Disneyland.
Bryant would tell you that his greatest adventure was his four children. He embarked on many challenging and crazy adventures with each of them. He always supported them in achieving their dreams. He was able to fix anything, and if he didn’t know how, he always found a way. His family always knew, no matter what, he would always be there, whether it was fixing a broken car or a broken heart.
Bryant always loved to travel. After high school, he went on an epic trip to Europe with his best friend, Ralph Feurer. The desire to explore new destinations was strengthened during his LDS mission to Venezuela. Later in life, he enjoyed escaping the cold winters of Utah with Dee. They loved traveling to anywhere tropical and warm where they could enjoy their shared love of scuba diving. When it came to trips with the kids, there were no places he loved more than Lake Powell and Disneyland.
He always liked to say, “In the life before this, I helped make Lake Powell,” no matter how often we told him it was a manmade lake. Lake Powell was his sacred place where he got to be a kid – a place that he could explore, enjoy the company of his children, and escape the world. Nothing could keep him from exploring every canyon, hiking every sand mountain, searching for every ruin, and jumping from every cliff. He made an innumerable amount of memories with them. They will always think of him when they visit.
In his later years, what brought him the most joy was his grandchildren. Each time he spoke of any of them, he would get a twinkle in his eye. He loved to say being a father was amazing, but being a grandfather was on another level entirely. He loved seeing his children become wonderful and loving parents whose children were filled with so much joy. He loved rolling around on the floor with them and splashing in the pool. Although most of them are young, they will never forget the incredible love that their “Papa” had for them.
Bryant was an incredible, optimistic, and unforgettable man. The joy and love he expressed as he went through his life was felt by everyone who met him. He never judged others and was the most genuine person you could ever hope to meet. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
