Brent Ivar Johanson

November 23, 1949 — October 16, 2020

On Friday, October 16, 2020, Brent Ivar Johanson, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 70 at the IMC hospital in Murray, Utah. Brent suffered from debilitating illness for many years, and ultimately contracted COVID-19 which led to his death.
Brent was born November 23, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Sigvard and Fannie Helena Johanson. Several years before his birth, his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Following their faith in the Church, his family immigrated to the United States in 1948. Brent was their first child born in the Unites States, and the 6th of 8 children.
Brent was taught the family business of masonry at an early age, including serving a labor mission with his family as a young teenager. Together with his dad and brother, the family built chapels across Scandinavia in support of the growing missionary efforts there.
Brent grew up in Salt Lake City and attended South High School.  His family served in the Swedish Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ in Salt Lake City for many years. It is there that he first met Dorothy Gay Millet, who was visiting the branch with a friend. He knew the moment he saw her that she would be his eternal companion. They were married, and began their family legacy on December 4, 1969, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Brent and Gay settled in Taylorsville, Utah to raise their family over nearly 40 years. Brother Johanson served in a variety of callings, including stake athletic director, Sunday school teacher, High Priest Group Leader, High Councilman, and counselor in the bishopric. Brent owned Johanson Masonry for a good part of that time, laying brick in Utah and California. He later drove truck for Old Dominion for almost 20 years and finally ended his career with his dream job, working for his sons as head of dispatch at Greenfield.
Brent’s greatest joys were his family and sports. He fiercely loved his seven children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He played baseball growing up, football in high school, and raised his family in basketball gyms and baseball fields. He was well known at the Taylorsville ballparks for his good humor. He was an avid BYU football, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Utah Jazz fan and tried to watch every game they played.
Brent is survived by his wife Gay, his sister Ann; his brothers Lee and Dan; and his children: Shane (Monica), Mary Ann (David) Stanley, Joseph (Erin), Amy (Stephen) Colbert, Rebecca, Caroline (Jacob) Morris, and Joshua. He is the proud grandpa of 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM., Saturday, October 24th, at the Taylorsville North Stake Center, 1250 W Atherton Drive, Taylorsville, UT.
