Betty “Ginger” Richardson Rogers Williams, 92, passed away Friday, October 17, 14, in Sandy City at Atria Assisted Living. She belonged to the Silvercrest Ward for many years.
She was born July 27, 1922 in Morecambe, Lancashire, England to Joseph Richardson and Lily Walmsley. She served in the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and helped to plot the invasion of Normandy, France.
Betty married Ivan Edwin Rogers, 18 August 1943 in Morecambe, England, later divorced. She married her eternal partner, Ray Martin Williams, 22 June 1963, in the Salt Lake Temple.
She started elementary school early, when she was 3 years old, and then skipped two levels within three weeks. After moving to Canada she attended secretarial school learning accounting. She moved to the USA and attended Salt Lake Community College where she graduated with degrees in business management, credit and finance, and accounting.
Betty was greatly involved with Boy Scouts of America during her entire adult life. She began as a cub master in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, earned her Woodbadge in Cubs. Part of her thesis was published in the Boy Scout Magazine. She worked with the cubs for 5 years in Canada. In the USA, she served as a scout leader, leader with her husband in the Handicapped Scout Troop, leader at Tracy Wigwam, Blazer Scout leader, trained hundreds of adults as leaders, helped to start several cub packs, earned a second Wood Badge, the Silver Beaver, and 50 Year Award for her service in the USA. She earned a District Award in Lone Peak District. She earned many, many more certificates. She recently received the Influential Woman in Scouting award. She loved attending Jamborees. One of her most favorite times was when she volunteered at the Teton High Adventure Base for the summer and attended the Philmont Scout Ranch. Most of her service was in conjunction with the LDS Church.
Betty had several occupations in her lifetime. She started working as a florist at the age of 15. She went on to become a secretary, accountant, office manager, sales person, real estate agent, and broker.
Betty loved to dance and earned many medals and trophies in international ballroom dancing. She also loved to travel and visited many parts of the world going on tours and cruises.
Betty is survived by her children Gloria Vincent (Warren), Michael Rogers (Jenni), Stepdaughter Jane Evans (Steve), 14 plus 6 adopted grandchildren, and 41 great grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Silvercrest Ward building, 9119 South 1300 East, Sandy, UT. Family and friends may visit Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, UT and one hour prior to services Saturday. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.
