Beth Hill

March 27, 1926 — January 8, 2014

Beth Elaine Powell Hill, age 87, passed peacefully from mortality on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 8th, 2014. She was the widow of A. Spencer Hill, a retired college professor who passed away three years ago, and is survived by her brother, Robert Powell, and by her six children: Gregory Hill of Bucks County, PA (married to Danette Fisher-Hill), Dr. Michael B. Hill of Taylorsville (married to Elizabeth Hill), Jeanine Lepinski of Draper (married to James Lepinski), Maribeth McCleary of Bozeman, MT (married to Alex McCleary), Rebecca Schreyer of Salt Lake City, and Donald Hill of Phoenix, Arizona, along with 25 grandchildren and a dozen great-grandchildren. Born on March 27, 1926 in Coalville, Utah to Edward Powell and Artemisia Bleak Powell and reared on a farm in Upton, Utah. Beth was the sixth of seven children born to her parents.
An accomplished and largely self-taught violinist, Beth earned a 4-year scholarship to Utah State Agricultural College (now USU) where she served as Concertmistress of the Utah State Symphony Orchestra, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. There she met her future husband, whom she married in the Logan LDS Temple after he returned from service in the US Army during World War II.
In addition to the mothering of her six children, Beth was a creative and enthusiastic elementary school teacher (primarily first grade, but often music as well) in Utah, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and Michigan. Parents of young students often requested that their children be placed in her class because of her reputation for engaging the minds of her brightest students without frustrating those who needed to progress more deliberately.
Beth served in many different Church callings throughout her life, though she most enjoyed teaching children in LDS Primary.
Although Beth’s physical body betrayed her in the end, she still knew all of her children, grandchildren and old friends that would come to visit. Her short term memory was non- existent, but she remembered the past with preciseness. Without a doubt, she’s having a joyous reunion with all of her family and loved ones.
Funeral Services will be held, Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Holladay 1st Ward, 2065 East 4675 South, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family may call one hour prior to services at the same location with interment at Holladay Memorial Park.
