Beryl Mamo Leinaala Peters, 81, died peacefully at her home surrounded by a circle of her friends on Saturday, April 9, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She had been born on May 1, 1934 in Honolulu, Hawaii and was the only child of Beryl Galbreith Peters and John H. Peters.
She was a quiet, observant, and modest woman who never made herself the center of attention, or bragged about her accomplishments. She held a Ph.D. in nursing, received in 1975. She also had a Masters of Nursing (’73) and a Masters of Science in Maternal-Child Nursing (’65), with two years of post-Masters study in the same field. Her career spanned a number of academic positions, including Associate Professor at the University of Utah College of Nursing; Director of programs such as Academic Computing and Parent-Child Nursing; and Assistant Dean of Graduate Affairs. Through grants, she helped bring in more than three million dollars to the State for programs to expand education in nursing.
Beryl was a published writer, reviewer and editor, not only in her professional field. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the newsletter for the Devon-Rex Breed Club from 1997 to 2009. She devoted her leisure time to her beloved Devon-Rex cats, and to the organizations which promoted them. She was involved in two local cat fancier clubs for over two decades, each holding an annual cat show in which she participated. One of her proudest moments was having her young white male Devon-Rex, named Logan, received his Grand Premier award.
Beryl is survived by a group of close friends who enjoyed her company, her sharp wit and blunt honestly, her tech-savvy, and her loyalty. Interment will be at Murray City Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016. Friends may leave condolences by going to www.memorialutah.com. We would ask that flowers not be sent.Service Information
