Bertha Alejandrina Gamarra

On Thursday, September 3, 2020, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and loyal friend returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father and loving Savior. She was greeted on the other side of the veil by her loved ones that preceded her in death – her parents, her brothers Luis (Alberto), Baltazar, Julian, and sisters Maura and Maria.
Bertha was born in Lima, Peru in 1930 to Baltazar Gamarra Avendaño and Juana Graciela Navarro. She adored her father who lovingly cared for her and her 5 siblings after her mother’s untimely passing. She wanted her family to know the stories of her childhood and youth and was happiest while sharing them.
After her mother’s passing, her father enrolled her in a parochial school where she was mentored and nurtured by the nuns. They taught her the art of embroidery and she grew to be an exquisite seamstress. Because of her excellent craftsmanship, one of her pieces was selected by the “Mother Superior” of the convent of Santa Teresa to be sent to the Queen of Spain as a gift.
She became skilled in many textile arts, including fashion design. She had an incredible ability to design and pattern clothes for all sizes, ages, and occasions. In addition to sewing, she was talented in knitting and crocheting.
Bertha was an incredible cook and delighted in sharing her Peruvian dishes with those she loved. She supported her growing family with her culinary skills. She had a restaurant and sold as a street vendor. Her delicious cooking will be missed, but most of all, the love with which it was prepared.
She is remembered as a wise counselor, confidant, and teacher. Bertha not only raised her children but took many others, including nieces and nephews, into her home for extended periods of time. She taught and nurtured in matters both secular and spiritual. She was never too busy to talk and would not let daily tasks divert her from a good conversation
with a family member.
She enjoyed visiting her homeland. She shared that the ocean breezes provided catharsis and comfort. Most importantly, she visited to maintain meaningful connection with her loved ones, including nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She loved all of her siblings, but particularly her sister, Maura, who was her maternal figure after her mother’s passing.
She was so grateful for her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She was a temple worker and demonstrated her devotion in her daily ministering and service.
All of her talents, everything she had, she utilized to bless her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone within her circle of influence. She was astute to their interests and was inspired in how to encourage and attend to them. She loved her Heavenly Father and emphasized that he never abandoned her during life’s difficulties.
She is survived by her five children Robert (Gladys), Wilbert (Deanna), Margot (James), Neli (Roger), Martin (Rosa), 22 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. Each of them were beneficiaries of her loving attention and will miss her dearly.
Following Salt Lake County’s mandate on facial coverings, face masks are required at all public gatherings. Social distancing will be enforced. For those unable to attend the services, Memorial Mortuaries and Cemeteries are offering a livestreaming of the funeral service on Zoom.

El jueves 3 de Septiembre de 2020, nuestra amorosa madre, abuela, bisabuela, tía, y amiga leal regresó en paz a su Padre Celestial y nuestro amoroso Salvador. Fue recibida al otro lado del velo por sus seres queridos que la precedieron en muerte: sus padres, sus hermanos Luis (Alberto), Baltazar (Chito), Julián, y sus hermanas, Maura y María.
Bertha nació en Lima, Perú el 4 de Junio de 1930 de Baltazar Gamarra Avendaño y Juana Graciela Navarro Guerrero. Ella adoraba a su padre, quien la cuidó con mucho amor a ella y a sus 5 hermanos después del prematuro fallecimiento de su madre. Ella deseaba que su familia conociera las historias de su infancia y juventud y ella era muy feliz al compartirlas.
Después del fallecimiento de su madre a sus 6 años, su padre la matriculó en una escuela parroquial donde las monjas la criaron y guiaron. Las monjas la enseñaron el arte del bordado y llegó a ser una costurera con mucho talento. Por su excelente trabajo artesanal, una de sus piezas fue seleccionada por la “Madre Superior” del convento de Santa Teresa para ser enviado como regalo a la Reina de España.
Se convirtió en experta en muchas artes textiles, incluyendo el diseño de moda. Tenía una habilidad increíble para diseñar, modelar, y confeccionar ropa para todos los tamaños, edades, y ocasiones. Además de coser, tenía talento para tejer y hacer crochet.
Bertha era una cocinera talentosa y estaba encantada de compartir sus platos peruanos favoritos con sus seres queridos. Ella contribuía financieramente a sus hijos y familia con sus habilidades culinarias. Ella tenía un restaurante en Magdalena y vendía sus platos favoritos – el menú del día, y también sus deliciosos postres. Vamos a extrañar su deliciosa comida, pero sobre todo, el cariño con la que fue preparada.
Vamos a recordarla como una buena consejera, confidente, y amiga sincera. Bertha no solo crió a sus hijos, sino sus puertas y su corazón estaban abiertas para los sobrinos y muchos otros. Ella fue una buena maestra en asuntos tanto seculares como espirituales. Ella nunca estaba demasiada ocupada para hablar y no dejaba que las tareas diarias la desvíen de la buena conversación con un miembro de la familia.
Disfrutaba visitar su tierra natal en Lima. Ella compartió que las brisas del mar le dió consuelo y serenidad. Pero la más importante, ella visitó para mantener una conexión con sus seres queridos, incluyendo sus sobrinos y nietos. Ella amaba a todos sus hermanos, pero particularmente a su hermana, Maura, quien fue su figura materna después del fallecimiento de su madre.
Ella estaba muy agradecida por ser miembro de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días. Sirvió en el templo y demostró su devoción en su ministerio diario y servicios a otros.
Todos sus talentos y todo lo que tenía, lo utilizó para bendecir a sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos, y cualquier persona dentro de su círculo de influencia de amor. Ella fue una buena motivadora e inspiró a otros y los animaba a conseguir sus metas y sueños. Ella amaba mucho a su Padre Celestial y enfatizó que Dios nunca la abandonó durante sus pruebas en la vida.
Le sobreviven sus cinco hijos Robert (Gladys), Wilbert (Deanna), Margot (James), Neli (Roger), Martin (Rosa), 22 nietos y 20 bisnietos. Cada uno de ellos se beneficiaron de su amorosa atención y vamos a extrañarla mucho.
