Bert Blanchfield

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Bert Leonard Blanchfield, passed away Wednesday May 9th, 2018 surrounded by family. Bert was born December 5th, 1923 in Fondis, Colorado to Milton Blanchfield and Daisy McFarland. Bert grew up as a farm boy in Pueblo, Colorado. Bert was a true cowboy at heart. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed riding horses. He served in the United States Navy during World War 2. He married his forever sweetheart Lorraine Gatzemeier July 8th, 1961 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Together they raised two beautiful children, one son, Bradley and one daughter, Brenda.
To his kids he was the best dad in the world, his life revolved around his kids and grandchildren. Bert always had a little too much fun playing outside with his kids all day that Lorraine would have to ring the cowbell to call him in for dinner. Bert had a passion for teaching his kids. Whether that was learning how to ski, riding dirt bikes, or learning how to snowmobile he was always teaching them something fun. His passions were being outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, ride horses, snowmobile, ski, and go camping. Anything outdoors, you name it, Bert did it. Before Bert lost his vision, he was an amazing craftsman. He loved to make anything from guys looking out the window, to jewelry boxes, to whistles and so much more. You name it, he could build it. People loved to drive by the Blanchfield house to see what he would come up with next.
Bert worked as a truck driver for over 40 years until he retired and then the real fun began. He helped raise all of his grandchildren and spent countless hours showing them all his fun “pioneer toys.” He loved children and always had a way of making them smile. He always came up with the funnest toys and games for the grandkids to play. Whether that was swinging from the tree, marshmallow guns, or throwing the ball on the roof and trying to catch it when it came down, to teaching us how to ride a lawn mower. We will all miss his soft-spoken voice, and kind heart.
Bert truly was the kindest man you could ever meet. He had a way of making everyone feel like they were his favorite. He put everyone before himself and always jumped at the chance to help those in need. He was known for his sense of humor, making you laugh, and making you smile, no matter your age. Bert had a way of leaving you better than he found you. There is not one bad thing you could say about him. Even after his battles with Alzheimer’s and Dementia he was still cute, sweet, Bert. Everyone that knew him loved him.
Bert is preceded in death by his father Milton Blanchfield, mother Daisy McFarland, brothers Victor, Bob, sisters Lilly and Delpha, and daughter Debbie. Bert is survived by his wife Lorraine; his sons Brian, Bradley (Shannon) and his daughter Brenda (Shane); and his twelve grandchildren; Jeremy, Angie, Christine, Kevin, Brookque, Brandon, Brysen, Anastacia, Jonah, Rayes, Brittany, Brooke and nine great grandchildren; Harlynn, Ash, Teague, Aizel, Percy, Nova, Beckam, Oakley, and Remington.
Our special thanks to all the staff at the George E. Wahlen Veterans home in Ogden for their support and exceptional care.
A viewing will be held Monday May 14th from 6-8 p.m. at Memorial Estates 6500 s. Redwood Road West Jordan, Utah. A graveside service and celebration of life will be held Tuesday May 15th at 3 p.m. at Memorial Estates. Dinner to follow at the LDS stake center located at 7265 South 2700 West West Jordan, Utah.
