Bernice J. Gales was born on June 30, 1922 to Bubba and Sarah Smith in Brooklyn, New York. She passed away on January 31, 2014 in Salt Lake City due to a recent stroke.
Bernice graduated from Brooklyn Community College where she studied business courses. She went into a career in various government agencies which lead her to a position in the state of Pennsylvania as a social worker supervisor. She retired from this position in 1987.
She entertained herself with numerous activities after her retirement. She went on many bus excursions and tours throughout the states. As her interest continued to grow, she embarked on world cruises to places like Rome, Milan and Cairo. It was during this time she acquired another traveling mate, her granddaughter Sarah. They embarked on trips to the Bahamas, Venezuela and other tropical ports. She moved to Utah in 2000 to join her remaining family.
She will be remembered for her gentle sweet spirit and her quiet fortitude. With these ways she made a place in everyone’s heart and mind. When she met you, she let you know that you were accepted not only into her world, but also in her heart. She spread her love and kindness to everyone she knew. God bless and protect you Bernice and keep you in His mercy and grace forever. Rest in eternal peace.
She is survived by James, her son; Sarah, her granddaughter, Rose and Andrea Gomez, her beloved step-granddaughter and numerous friends and acquaintances. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers.
The family wishes to extend their greatest thanks to the staff members of the Federal Heights Rehabilitation Center and to Inspiration Hospice for their truly loving and gracious care of Bernice. A celebration of her life Memorial Service will be held at the Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road in West Jordan on Thursday, February 13, 2013 at 7:00 PM.
