Benjamin Lee McGlamery, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away at the age of 82 on February 29, 2016 in Provo, Utah from complications related to Alzheimer’s.
Ben was born October 1, 1933 in Wichita, Kansas to Olive Lucille and Benjamin McGlamery and spent most of his boyhood in Odessa, Texas. He earned a bachelor’s in electrical engineering at Texas Tech, then headed back east to work at Radio Corporation of America (RCA).
While at RCA, Ben was called to serve in the US Navy–a turn of events that would change the course of his life. He met his future wife, Karen Barnson, when he was stationed in San Diego, California. They later married in the Los Angeles LDS temple on January 26, 1962, settled in San Diego, and soon began a family which grew to include five daughters. Karen was the great love of Ben’s life, and he frequently expressed his love and admiration for Karen throughout their fifty-four years of marriage.
Ben had an inquisitive mind and keen interest in science. He earned a master’s degree in physics from SDSU and had a fulfilling career in the field of optical engineering. He spent most of his life studying light and the universe and helping to discover things which still remain on the cutting edge of science. Ben also contributed to the safety of our country by working on several top secret projects for the US Department of Defense.
For those who knew and loved Ben, words such as kind, gentle, loving, hard working, committed, smart, loyal, honest, family-oriented, man of God, and humorous come to mind, to name a few. He tirelessly served others, and often the first thing he would ask when entering a room was “How can I help?” He enthusiastically served for years as a scout leader and many other callings in his church, including that of Bishop.
Ben also enjoyed camping and hiking, the beach, scuba diving, racquetball, flying, and music, particularly anything played by Karen.
He is survived by his wife Karen and children Linda DeVilliers, Maureen Parker (Presley), Nancy Woodland (Joe), Jeanette (Leonardo Ciampa), and Denise, as well as nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister LaVonna Dee Bringle.
A special thanks the wonderful staff at the Courtyard at Jamestown Memory Care and the many others who cared for Ben and supported his family.
