Benjamin James Whetman

December 1, 1947 — February 3, 2022

Benjamin James Whetman the man who was the stable support who held us all up passed away on February 3, 2022, with “his Sweet Pea”, his wife of 48 years by his side at the University Hospital due to complications from COVID-19.  Ben was born December 1st, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lawrence Abraham Whetman and Dora Irene Warren. He was the youngest of 4 children.
Ben graduated from Hillcrest High School and continued his education at Utah Technical College. He began his career as a machinist at Hill Air Force Base in 1966 and retired in 2009 as a senior machinist in civilian service after 43 years. He was a very talented tool and die machinist who enjoyed his job and the long-lasting friendships he made during his career.
He was the most patient person you would ever know but also a true joker. He was a devoted and supportive husband and a very loving father who taught his children to work hard, enjoy life, and be themselves. He was a true do-it-yourselfer and a hobbyist mechanic. You would often find him tinkering on vehicles or doing odd jobs around the house. After retiring he would love to spend his time down on the family property in Monticello, Utah hunting, fixing up his trailer, and working the land. We would often find ourselves walking with the property line as he would tell stories of his grandmother and uncle John who originally homestead the land. But he found the most joy in playing and being with his grandchildren.
Ben was the recipient of a double lung transplant, courtesy of a generous donor in 2015, which allowed his family an additional 7 years of memories to cherish. The courage and strength he had just before and after his transplant were admirable. He was always hoping for one more year, one more month, one more day. He reminded us that every day is a gift.
Ben is survived by his wife, Denene and children; James (SaLinda), Lori (Ron) Robertson, Lawrence, Matthew, Sarah (Nick) Kehl, Emily Whetman (Mike) Bernard, Zach (Allison), brother Dan (Sherry), and sister Judy (Rocky) Dunrow; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Proceeded in death by his parents, brother Dave Whetman and favorite Uncle John Whetman.
