Benjamin Cabey was born May 9, 1954 in Queens New York to Alfred Thomas and Bertha Spann Cabey. Benjamin’s mother passed away when he was only five years old. He was one of three siblings, all brothers. After about three years, Benjamin’s father married Annie Doris who also had three children, two boys and one girl and then together they had a son making seven children. His father died when he was only twelve leaving his stepmother Annie to raise seven children. Benjamin was at an age where he was expected to help with the raising of the younger siblings and became quite a good cook.
In the early 1970’s Benjamin and his brother Edward moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where they could have a new beginning. It was at this time that he became involved with a Pentecostal church where he made many lifelong friends. It was also during this time that he became a father to Ava Maria and Victoria Rose, daughters he loved dearly.
In 1977 Benjamin met Phillip who was living in the apartment directly below his and they became life partners the next year.
Benjamin was a talented musician who played the saxophone and had a beautiful singing voice. Over the years he performed at many events related to Black History Month, Martin Luther King days and LGBT functions. He founded an organization called Fusion Productions that raised money to help support people affected by the HIV epidemic. He also sang the National Anthem to open several Utah Jazz games. He acted in several plays.
Benjamin became interested in the visual arts and created many fine paintings, sculptures, clocks and other decorative pieces that were sold in galleries in Salt Lake City and San Francisco.
Later in his life, Benjamin returned to school and earned his Masters of Social Work degree from the University. He met many dear friends at the university and he became a father figure and mentor to many. He cherished these relationships until the end of his life.
Benjamin is survived by his partner Phillip Broderick, his daughters Ava Maria Cabey and Victoria Rose Bacon, his brothers Alfred, Rubin, and Alexander, his sister Renée. He is also survived by many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends that he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kevin, his brother Edward (who he missed every day) and his beloved niece Debra.
