Austin Webster Garner

June 24, 1919 — August 15, 2016

On Monday, August 15, 2016, Austin Webster Garner passed away at home in South Jordan, Utah, at the age of 97.
Austin was born on June 24, 1919 in Rexburg, Idaho, the third of six children born to Walter Mack and Rilla Webster Garner.  He grew up in Rexburg, Idaho, where he played quarterback on the Ricks College football team in 1939 and 1940.
While at Ricks, he met the beautiful Fan Mathews from Grace, Idaho who said the first time she saw Austin they were dragging him off the football field by his heels following an injury.  He continued to play that game, and actually finished the season with his arm tied to his side.  The couple was married in Soda Springs, ID on July 3, 1941.  Also in 1941 he joined the National Guard and was called up on Pearl Harbor Day and was stationed in Seattle patrolling the west coast.
After the war, he enrolled at the University of Utah in Merchandising and Marketing and was the first person in his family to graduate from college.  He went to work at JC Penney’s and later joined Grand Central Stores where he worked at corporate headquarters as the buyer of soft goods.
Austin is survived by four daughters: Ann Thorpe (Brent), Polly Mallory (Doug), Debi Day (Ken), and Nancy Garner.  He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren and his brother William “Billy” Garner.  He was preceded in death by his wife Fan, his great granddaughter Samantha Judy, and his siblings, Walter Mack Jr, Blaine Webster, Lois Blanch Virgin and Janice Garner.
A memorial service honoring Austin was held on Sunday, August 14 at the home of his daughter Debi Garner Day.  Attended by more than 70 family members who were in town for a family reunion the day prior, the service concluded with each of his posterity receiving a personalized hand-written note from their family’s beloved patriarch.  Interment will be at the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery in Salt Lake City,  Utah.
