Austin Heywood

September 7, 1934 — May 31, 2014

Austin Garn Heywood Sr., loving husband, patriarch, brother, favorite uncle, & grandpa passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones on Saturday, May 31, 2014 in Riverton, Utah.
Garn was born to Austin and Nellie Heywood September 7, 1934 in Panguitch, Utah, and later grew up in Cedar City, Utah. He enjoyed fast cars, and dating girls and playing alto saxophone in the family dance band. The band was a hit all over southern Utah, playing High School dances, Christmas and New Years Eve Parties. At 19, Garn was called and served an honorable LDS Mission to Buenos Aires, Argentina. After his Mission, his sister introduced him to the love of his life, and they were quickly engaged. Garn married Jenean Girot of Springville, Utah on March 20, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple.
For the next 2 years, Garn enlisted in the Army reserve, training at Camp Williams, where he earned the Expert Marksmanship Badge. He attended CSU in Cedar City and eventually moved his young family to Provo, UT. With the support of his wife Jenean, Garn graduated from BYU with a BA in Business and took a job with Associated Financial in Southern California as an Account Manager. When the company asked to relocate Garn further north, he determined it was time to move his family back home to their roots in Utah. He and his Dad opened a Burger shop in Sandy, UT where the whole family pitched in and sold hamburgers for 25¢. After struggling with the new business and worrying his wife had to work nights, Garn made a pivotal transition to Allstate Insurance. In his new position, he was able to magnify his true talent in sales. From day one, he was a top sales agent, highly respected in Utah and the western region for his consistency and achievements. He loved to serve his clients and his clients loved him. He had several of the same loyal clients for 29 plus years. He eventually retired from Allstate, but never from salesJ
Garn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a deep love for his Savior and loved to bear his testimony of the gospel. He loved to serve and always said, “You never turn down a calling from the Lord”. He enjoyed serving as chorister, choir director, scout-master, ward mission leader, Bishop and Counselor in the Stake Presidency of the Liberty Stake. Most recently, Garn served in the Jordan River Temple early mornings with his best-friend Jenean, and would have loved to serve another LDS Mission,
Garn’s passions were his wife, his family, BYU sports, and music. He was a true-blue loyal BYU fan and lifetime member of the BYU Cougar club. He never purposely missed a Saturday home football game and loved to sit in front of Patty Edwards on the 44-yard line and cheer on his Cougars. Garn had a love for life and was generous to a fault. He always had a story or joke ready to make any situation bearable. He loved to laugh and make you smile. His compassion and good humor will be sorely missed.
Garn is survived by his Eternal Companion Jenean Girot Heywood and their four children Torrie Lee Benson (Dr. Michael K), of Charleston, IL., Bobbett Evans, Riverton, Austin Garn Heywood Jr., Sandy. JaNell DeWeese Child (Evan A.), Riverton,
16 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Austin and Nellie Heywood, brother Richard Heywood, brother-in-law Lloyd Grames, sister-in-law Eleanor Heywood, and son-in-law Brand DeWeese. Oh what a reunion we are sure they have had this week.
The viewings will be held Friday, June 6, from 6-8 pm and Saturday, June 7, 10-10:45 am, prior to the funeral services at 11 am at the Bluffdale Utah Stake Center, 2742 W 14400 S, Bluffdale, UT. Interment will follow at Lake Hills Memorial Park in Sandy, UT.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be given to any medical foundation of the donator’s choice or the BYU general scholarship fund, which can be found at: http://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/byu
The family would like to thank all medical caregivers and doctors for their gracious care and attention and patience with Garn’s jokes and quick whit. 😉
