Astrid Fischer

August 2, 1932 — February 24, 2020

Astrid Wally Emilie Fischer returned to her heavenly home on Monday, February 24, 2020 from the effects of advanced vascular dementia.

Astrid was born to the late Emil Martin Wilhelm Koch and Lilly Antonia Friederike Berta Koch in Hamburg, Germany. She was the youngest of five daughters.

She immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1954. Her first job in her new home was babysitting, where she also learned the English language from the children.

Astrid met her sweetheart, Jared Fischer, at a soccer dance. They were both standing by the wall while their friends were dancing. She asked him to dance, and the rest is history.

Astrid was an accomplished seamstress. Many family and friends benefitted from her skillful sewing of dresses and other clothing. She also made some beautiful quilts. She was always happy to be working on a few sewing projects at once. For her, it was a great joy to give someone a beautiful piece of clothing and seeing the smile of the recipient.

All of our family members and many friends enjoyed her cooking and baking. It gave her a great sense of satisfaction. When we reminisce our time at Oma’s house, the food always seems to come up with smiles on our faces. She is especially known for her potato pancakes and goulash, potato salad, pork roast and zucchini skillet.  The desserts are particular favorites with the fresh fruit tarts, torte, apfel strussel and butter kuchen.

True to her German traits she always gave service when she saw the opportunity, but had a hard time receiving service given to her.

She had a great love for her family and friends.

Astrid has been preceded in her death by her parents and son Melvin Fischer (Kathie), grandson Jaryd Fischer, and great-grandson Jake Fischer. She is survived by her sweetheart Jared Fischer; son Milton (Marlene), daughters Monika (David), and Marilyn; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren with one on the way.
