Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Arvid Herbert Stromberg Anderson, age 92, went the way of all the earth early Sunday morning, December 11th, 2016, due to causes incident to age.
Born in Black Pine, Idaho on August 3rd, 1924, to Lars Anderson and Thekla Victoria Stromberg Anderson, Arvid was the sixth child of eight (the eighth, Alma, being stillborn). Being the smallest son earned him the schoolyard nickname “Peanut”, which astonished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who only ever knew him as a larger-than-life adult.
Arvid enlisted in the United States Army on May 19th, 1943, and served as a Technical Sergeant in the European theatre of World War II, doing communications work. He was stationed in Reims, France when the first instrument of surrender was signed there on behalf of the German High Command on May 7th, 1945, and he was honorably discharged from active service on February 7th, 1946.
On March 13th, 1950, Arvid married his sweetheart, Amy Marlene Hess, in Ely, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on August 27th, 1977. In 2016 they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
Over the decades of his life, Arvid supported his family in many ways: he spent time as a farmer, and as a part-time trucker, hauling barley one way and coal the other, back and forth from southern Idaho to central Utah. He also served for several years as town marshal in Snowville, Utah. Finally, after moving his family to Kearns, Utah in 1963, he worked as a Ford automotive technician for 26 years. He lived in Kearns and Beaver Dam, Arizona for the rest of his days.
Arvid was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both sets of his grandparents moved their young families from Sweden after joining the LDS Church in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and Arvid continued their tradition of faith. He served in numerous ward callings over his lifetime.
Repairing and creating were two of Arvid’s great talents and passions. He built his first car when he was only 14 years old, and was known for repairing radios and other electronics, especially after graduating from Granite High School and studying electronics at Welltech Technical College in 1968. He built swing-sets from scratch for his grandchildren to enjoy, kept his own woodshop, and maintained cars and boats as a hobby. Arvid played several instruments, including the piano, violin, guitar, and harmonica, and he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, shooting, and grilling.
Our family always said that if you left Arvid’s home hungry, it was your own fault – and it was absolutely true. He was warm and welcoming to those who crossed his threshold, and took great pleasure in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren enjoying each other’s company.
He is remembered for his determination, playful humor and fierce loyalty to his loved ones, high standards, and pride in his work, his service, and his family. He worked hard all his life, and when a door closed for him, he either found a new one or built one himself. He is dearly loved, and will be deeply missed.
Arvid is survived by his wife and his six children: Brian (Susan) Anderson, Susan (Lamar) Udy, Alan (Jetta) Anderson, Sally Roberts, Judy Harvey, and Grant (Barbara) Anderson. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, as well as granddaughter Autumn Rosella Harvey, grandson Boyd Lynn Roberts, and great-granddaughter Tirzah Ceann Isom.
