Arlene Smart passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 24th, just a month after her 70th anniversary with her adoring husband and high school sweetheart, the self-styled "mean n’ ornery" Dean Smart. They were inseparable and had several hobbies together in which she excelled, including archery, where she became a three-time national women's champion, golf, and square dancing, both competing and teaching thousands as her husband called. She liked to sew, embroider, crotchet, and knit, and she and her husband made hundreds of hats and scarves to donate during her lifetime. They also enjoyed traveling and went on several cruises with friends and family, of which she shared fond memories.
Arlene cherished her time with her family and was happiest surrounded by those she loved and cared for. She and her siblings coordinated family reunions as often as possible and were very close-knit. One way she showed her love was with her delicious cooking and baking, making many family favorite recipes. She cooked her wonderful Thanksgiving dinner from scratch every year despite ongoing health challenges. She also enjoyed gardening and preserving food, and her pantry was always full of delectable treats like homemade peach jam and salsa.
Her unwavering faith in her Savior and her Christlike love for everyone was a core value and she lived true to her beliefs. She valued attending weekly LDS church meetings and held several callings in her ward, stake, and as a temple worker in the Jordan River and SLC temples, where she served along with her husband for decades. She was known as a cheerful, humble, and nurturing wife, mother, and grandmother with a huge heart.
She cherished her intimate relationships with her siblings and parents, filled with laughter and treasured memories, as well as with many lifelong friends who were as dear to her as family. Arlene is lovingly remembered by her surviving husband, sister, daughter, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She reunites with her two beloved sons, Kevin and Guy, her parents, Arthaleen and Walter, and several brothers and sisters, Doris, Lucille, Leah, Phyllis, Ray, and Frank.
